Backup and restore Microsoft SQL 2000 server with Windows server 2003 std

Thread needs solution

We are reloading a production server (SQL2000 running on Windows server 2003 std, Raid 5) to SQL2005. What is the best way to backup the SLQ2000 on a network server? In case we have to recover that server. TIA

Hello LakinTire support,

Thank you for your question. I will be happy to assist you.

Database servers, such as MS SQL Server and MS Exchange, can be problematic to backup, partially due to open files and indexes and partially due to rapid data changes. Therefore it is usually recommended that the database be suspended just before the backup (data capture). You can suspend the database and clear all caches to ensure that all transactions are completed at the moment of data capture.

If your database is compatible with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), then checking the Enable VSS support box in Database support window will ensure completion of all transactions before the backup process starts. The examples of VSS aware databases are Exchange, Oracle, SQL Server.

If your database is not compatible with Microsoft VSS, you can use batch files instead. I would also recommend page 74 of our User Guide and this article if you need additional information.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Thanks for your comment, Anton.
So, what do I need to setup a network backup server for Arconics? I am only familiar with imaging a server from an Acronics bootable cd. And this is a raid 5 Dell server.

Hello LakinTire support,

Thank you for your reply.

Creating backups in Windows would be similar, except for minor differences. In the main program menu select to create a backup plan and just make sure that you have a couple of options enabled.

I have attached a screenshot to my post that highlights these options.

I can also recommend the following resources which will assist you in your task.

- Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Backup Plans and Backup Policies

- Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Specifying Task Credentials

- Acronis Backup & Recovery 10: Required User Permissions for Local and Remote Management

- Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Asks for Credentials when Editing a Task

- Backing Up to NAS

Please let me know if you have additional questions or run into any issues.

Thank you.
