Backup/Restore of Exchange 2003 Servers
Hey All,
Have a few questions regarding the backup/recovery of an Exchange Server 2003. I'm confused.....
1. Using BR10 Advanced Server with AR for Exchange. Will I have to stop the exchange services via a batch file to get my backup of the OS to be in the correct state for recovery. Reading the manual I dont think so for the exchange dbases...
2. When I do the backup of the os, do I excluded the Exchange Dbases?
3. My goal in this is to do a bare bones restore in the quickest time.

Anton, thank you for the quick response. Another question:
1. Using your option 1, Do I use vss option as seen in your vss.jpg attachjemnet to backup the OS? My goal here is to be able to do a bare bones restore.

Hello Glenn!
Thank you for your question!
In case you are backing up your machine without including the database, then there is no need in enabling VSS.
VSS provides our product with the access to the database services so that we could automatically suspend them on the moment of creation of snapshot, and start them again as soon as snapshot is taken. It allows you to backup the machine without batch files.
Should you backup the entire machine with the database running on it, you will have to enable VSS. Otherwise the database in the image may be reported to be corrupted.
VSS definitely doesn't play role in the bare metal recovery ability, since it is used only when a user needs access to the database services. Should you exclude Exchange db, not VSS enabling is requiered.
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!
Thank you!
