BR10 Server and/or Echo Server "System State" backup

I had a huge scare this weekend. I brought one of my customer's backups (full image of a SBS 2003 server) back to the shop and did a test restore to one of my servers. All went well until I rebooted the server after the restore. It booted with a Directory Services error 0xC00002E1 error. The NTDS Database was corrupt. What I had to do to get it running again was go back to the "live" server, do a Windows "System State" backup, reboot this "Test" server in to Directory Services Restore mode and restore the Windows "System Backup"
I just got off the chat page with Acronis support and they confirmed what I thought I new. That when you do a image backup that it backs up the "System State" lock, stock and barrel. You don't have to do anything special. No stopping services before the back or anything. Just do a image and you are good. Can someone, for the record, confirm this?
I have not been doing Windows "System State" backups because of tis. I do nightly full images of all my servers and according to what I have been told that is the safest, most reliable way to do backups. So does anyone want to take a guess as to why, when I restored this image, it booted with a corrupt NTDS error? It really, really scares me and if I weren't able to go back to the "live" server and make a Windows "System State" backup I would have been totally, 100% screwed.
Am I missing something? All these years I have felt so well protected and now this. I will confess to using Echo Server on this particular server but my above questions and concerns apply to my BR10 servers as well. Am I leaving a gaping hole in by back strategy by not dowing Windows "System State" backups as well?

Thanks dev-anon. I went back through all my servers and checked the multi-volume snapshot and vss settings. It was hit and miss but this one particular server had neither of those options checked. It is odd. It seemed like Echo Server did not set those two options by default whereas BR10 did. I'll restore another backup from this one particular server and let you know if that did the trick.

Any help out there,thanks
