BSOD after updating Backup and Recovery 10 Workstation

Thread needs solution

I thought I would let folks know that I also received a BSOD after upgrading to the latest version of Backup and Recovery 10. I did not attempt a fresh install to see if there would be a similar issue, but since I have the same BSOD with the new WinPE recovery disk, I assume I would.

Specs:  Gateway 7020 FX originally running Vista SP2 prior to upgrading Acronis. Had the same issue (on the same computer) with Windows 7 RTM.

I never had any BSOD's with Vista SP2 prior to upgrading Acronis. I decided to re-image the computer to Windows 7 and then upgraded Acronis... and also began getting the BSOD's.  Last but not least... on this particular computer even the recovery disc (WinPE 2) built with the latest WinPE ISO builder also crashed and BSOD' at the same place during the boot cycle.

I am able to boot with no issues using my old recovery disk (WinPE built from the July version of B&R10 Iso builder).

I read UDaMan's post and the tech supports post regarding: filter.sys (not on my computer), no USB's were installed.  I do have a built in card reader, but was unable to go into device manager to disable them (because the computer would BSOD before either Vista or Win 7 would finish booting).

How I fixed: I remembered that the snapman.sys (windows>system32>drivers folder) had caused various issues in the past with other software, etc.  So I decided to boot to a competitors recovery disk (the new version acronis's B&R10 disk has a file program, but I couldn't use it.. bsod's. The July version didn't have a file program) navigated to the file and deleted it.

After deleting the snapman.sys file, my computer booted up without any issues. I then rolled back my image to Win 7 RTM, did the same thing and it also booted up fine. Once it was booted I was able to delete the acronis B&R 10 from the computer. I then rebooted several times and had no problems.  Then... just to test it, I put the new WinPE recovery disk (with the new snapman.sys file) in the computer and booted to it... bamm.... bsod.

I took a screen shot (with my camera) of the error, but won't be able to upload it till in the morning.

Matthew,

This implies that snapman.sys somehow is causing a problem with the card reader, for now I have just left the USB connector from the card reader to the motherboard unplugged. I would like to use the card reader at some point.

My snapman.sys file has the date of the recent B&R file so I assume it was updated with the install of 11105. What does removing it do to B&R?

Hi UDaMan:

In a nutshell (from the Acronis website) it is used for "The SnapAPI module is in charge of all I/O operations on the hard disk of Acronis software working in Windows. It also allows to create backups under running Windows with an unlimited number of files open for reading and writing without the necessity to reboot the computer."

Here is a link that talks more about it: kb.acronis.com/content/1512

If you want to do backups while Windows is running 'live' you have to have it installed. I prefer to do mine 'cold' using a boot disk.

Hi, I have made the same experience. I unplug my combo device with cardreaders and BSOD disappears.

I hope Acronis will fix the problem with snapman.sys driver soon so I can reuse my combo device again.

Hello all,

Matthew, thank you very much for the picture of BSOD, and for your cooperation!

Yes, this BSOD is caused by SnapAPI drivers from our software. Unfortunately, the one thing which can be done here is removing current version of SnapAPI and software reinstallation without external devices attached. Here is the article with description on how to remove them: http://kb.acronis.com/content/1620

Thank you.

Hi,

can Acronis give a time frame when thiss issue is solved

thanks for feedback.

regards Toni

Alexander,

Yes, but what will happen when you reconnect those devices? Is there a new version of SnapApi?

Hi Acronis Support (and Others):

There are now three threads regarding this severe issue. I purchased my license to try out the software. Prior to this we were using a competitors backup software. Their software doesn't have many of the features B&R10 has... but it is stable. I never had to worry about their software hozing my system.

I would find it hard to recommend to my supervisor that we purchase any more licenses. This issue should have been discovered with even a little bit of testing prior to releasing the update. The other threads  so far are:

Hello all,

Thank you for taking time to contact us.

We have reproduced the issue, and our developers have found the exact reason. In some words, the program fails to initialize some kinds of USB devices. The fix will be available in the next update of the program. We have requested a fix that can be applied without waiting for the next build.

Thank you.

So if I can just be clear about this issue...no USB device should be attached when performing an install of Acronis 10? I installed Acronis 10 from an external attached USB hard drive on our CEO's Sony VAIO tt series (I actually upgraded Acronis from Acronis TrueImage), and after rebooting I kept getting the BSOD. I could not even go into Safe mode, including Safe Mode with Command line only, nor could run the recovery. I ended having to boot from the Widows Vista DVD and doing and selecting repair, which basically ran system restore. As of today I am running 10.0.11105. Can you give an estimate of when an updated version will be released?

Thanks

AM
