Copying an image into an older and smaller system

Thread needs solution

I succesfully installed Acronis backup & recovery 10 server for windows + Universal restore (build 10.0.11345) on my new server running Windows server 2003 R2 standard SP2.
This new server has a 6 disks RAID system with two virtual disks:
Disk C: 507GB total, about 8 GB used,
Disk D: 1680GB total, about 40 GB used.
My task is to install an image of this server on an older one having a 3-disks RAID of about 135GB capacity and a completely different hardware.
Is this possible?
If the answer is yes, how can i specify the additional disk drivers requested by the restartable disk creation procedure?

Hello Alberto!

Thank you for your question and for the details specified.

This scenario is surely possible, but before we proceed, I'd like to mention that the build you have installed is an outdated one, and the latest is 11639. You can download it from here in your account. Feel free tpo update the product if you need to!

Back to the case itself: we expect no issues with the scenatio specified. The main concern here is the dissimilar hardware, but since you have Acronis Universal Restore, there's almost nothing to worry about.

In order to restore the image onto the dissimilar hardware, please

  1. Create a bootable media (Tools -> Create Bootable Rescue Media)
  2. Gather the drivers for dissimilar mass storage devices (chipset, RAID controller). The best way to do it is to contact the devices' vendor support and request the latest drivers.
  3. Boot the target machine from the CD created, follow the steps of recovery Wizard with pointing onto the folder with drivers and press proceed.

That's the main steps, and I would advise you to check this Acronis Universal Restore Guide with step-by-step screenshots, so that you could be sure in every move you're making.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Thank you.
I am downloading the new build and will follow your directions.
