Could not start the Acronis Managed Machine Service service on Local Computer
We have installed Acronis Backup and Recovery on our MS Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition server and it was working fine until yesterday.
Now we get a balloon pop up window that tells us "Acronis Managed Machine Service is unavailable." but when we try to manually restart the service we get the error "Could not start the Acronis Managed Machine service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
The Windows Event log shows "Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Acronis Managed Machine Service service to connect." with and event ID of 7009.
Obviously our backups are not running and we are coming up to a Holiday week, this needs resolved quickly. Any ideas?

Hello,
I ran in a similar problem last week and spent four days to get my Acronis Backup & Recovery Installation run again - without success. With a look in the forum I now know, that I'm not alone :-(
Following is the description of my problem with the "Arconis Managed Machine Service":
A few weeks ago I installed Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 without any problems. The software was working absolutely fine until last week.
During a backup I had a BSOD (whyever). After restarting the machine, the Acronis Managed Machine Service doesn't work any longer. The service starts and stops after a few seconds.
Since I thought that the Acronis installation was damaged by the BSOD I deinstalled ABR (incl. SQL Server) and installed it again. The installation for the Agent took extremely long and terminated with a time-out, but was marked as "successfully installed" in the installer. No need to say, that the Agent can't be connected...
Again deinstallation of ABR and running the ABR cleaner additionally.
Reinstallation of ABR - same result as before.
Again deinstallation and manual cleaning of the machine (files, folders, registry entries, user accounts etc.); seems, that the uninstaller and cleaner won't really work effective...
Downloaded the actual build and tried again a installation.
The same result with the installation of the Agent and in addition "no response" of the installer during the installation of the Management Console. Installer needed to be closed with the task manager (this is reproducable).
Extracted the Agent and Management Console installer from the package, and installed separately again - successful.
But guess: the Managed Machine Service stops as often as it started and the Agent can't be connected.
Same again from the beginning, deinstalled, manual cleaning; found also entries in the local security policy.
This behaviour is reproducable.
The machine is in a workgroup, MS Windows 7 German 64bit. Tried installation with and without USB periphery...
In the meantime I'm tired to try the installation again and to start a system rebuild after recognizing that it won't work (it is much faster than the manual cleaning of the machine every time)
Since Acronis, as I saw, promised to resolve the different problems with Managed Machine Service and it seems still to be there, does anyone have an idea what could be the reason for this problem in the actual build?
By the way, it doesn't matter whether the services run under accounts created by ABR or an existing local admin account.
Or does anyone know about the prerequisites to get the Managed Machine Service working?
Thanks for your responses in advance.
Christian

Hello all,
Thank you for your posts.
Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience. These issues could occur due to insufficient permissions of your user accounts, or the Acronis components not updating properly.
The fastest way to resolve all these issues would be to submit a support request with the AcronisInfo report, our support engineers will be able to take a closer look at your setups and fix these problems.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thank you.

Hello Anton,
thanks for you reply.
I will give it a try.
I will install ABR a again and will send the AcronisInfo report to your support.
By the way, since I also thought that this could be a "permissions" problem, I've put all Acronis accounts in relevant local groups.
In addition I ensured that all relevant users have the right to login as service. Changed the access rights on all relevant folder to full access for "everyone".
Please inform, whether I should install the complete package or should install all modules separately; if I should install it separately, please inform also in which order I have to install it.
What I have seen also, is that either I did a complete clean of the machine, the license keys for ABR und Universal Restore seem to remain on the machine, because it's not necessary to activate the keys in the License Server after installation.
Awaiting for your answer. Thanks in advance.
Best regards
Christian

Hello Christian,
Thank you for your reply.
I would suggest to install the complete package, this way, in case of an installation failure, you will be prompted by a created msi log, that is very helpful to determine the cause of installation issues.
What type of uninstallation did you perform? Was it manual, or did you use our clean up utility? It is possible, the clean up utility did not run properly, because the user under which it was run did not have sufficient privileges. Have you tried installing the software under your admin account?
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you.

Hello Anton,
today I found time, to try the installation again. But things got worse... :-(
Before I started with the installation I ran the cleanup utility again to be sure, that the last installation "forgot" nothing with the last deinstallation.
But the cleanup utility crashed, please see the attached screenshot.
After this I rebooted the system and started the installation with the latest build.
The first step was to install the License Server - worked fine, but as I already wrote the license keys were still on the machine?
Nevertheless I started the installation, selected all components except the vmware agent, let the installer create its own user accounts and so on.
The installation started with the installation of "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition", but crashed after a few second. The headline in the installer is: "Removal of Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Components failed"?! (why does the installer want to remove SQL Server components during the installation, since there are no SQL components, and it should be installed....)
The error details are:
Code: 06442528
Line-Tag: 0x8385a2faldaee6661l
Message: Internal Error
The "view Log" Link opens only the explorer with the folder of the installation files?!
With a look in "Programs and Functions" in the control panel I saw that "Microsoft SQL Server Native Client", "Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English)" and "Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer" is installed, nothing more.
Deinstalled the SQL components, rebooted and started the installer again. But now the installation may not be started since the License Server is damaged. Repaired the License Server - works.
Started the installation - same behaviour as before.
This behaviour is reproducable, no matter whether the installed SQL components are on the machine or deinstalled before a newly installation try.
So, what to do?

Addition to my last posting:
My machine is running Windows 7 Ultimate German 64bit, 8GB RAM.
OS and programs are on a RAID 0, data is on a RAID 1.
Both RAID's respectively all partitions are Bitlocker encrypted.
In the meantime I ran also the AcronisInfo Tool, which generated the AcronisInfo.zip, but terminated with errors:
Failed to obtain the list of groups
Failed to generate the RSOP report.
Please inform about an email address where the AcronisInfo.zip to be send to.
Thanks.

Hello Christian,
Thank you for getting back to us.
I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience and for your attempts to resolve this with us. In my opinion, the best way to resolve this issue, is to contact our technical support directly. Please check this article that explains in detail how to contact our technical support. When submitting the report, please attach to it the AcronisInfo report that you generated together with the MSI log. It will help us to determine the exact cause of the issue.
If you experience any delays with your case, please let us know and we shall take care of it.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you.

Hello Anton,
I contacted, as you suggested, TechSupport directly. But I could only send the support form without attachment.
As soon as I add the ZIP with all relevant information and reports, the submission of the form stops. Since this I've asked them to send me an email address were I can send the ZIP to.
By the way, I'm not able to send the MSI log, since it will not be generated...
I will wait for an answer til beginning of next week; if I got no answer, I will post it here, that you may take care of it.
Thanks in advance.

The 2nd set of steps in the article below worked for me after a BSOD during backup caused the Acronis Managed Machine Service to terminate as soon as it was started.
http://kb.acronis.com/content/7921
Unfortunately, this completely deletes all tasks, but at least it got the software working again.
