Does Backup & Recovery for Server

Thread needs solution

I have a Dell PowerEdge on which Windows Server 2008 R2 is running.

It has VMware Server 2.0, which has two Virtual Servers, CentOS5.5 and Windows 2003.

Does Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Server for Windows make backup while those virtual servers are running?

Should I turn off both of them while Acronis is making backup?

Hello Frist Last,

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here. Thanks for finding time to open the thread regarding this question, I'll be glad to address it.

Acronis Backup and Recovery for Server can backup virtual machines only as files, i.e. when they are powered off. So you will need to shut them down during the backup process if you need them to be backed up correctly.

Should you need to backup virtual machines while they are running, you will need Acronis Backup and Recovery Advanced Server Virtual Edition. Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Advanced Server - Virtual Edition allows for installation on one physical machine and backup of unlimited number of virtual machines on the same physical machine. You can test the solution, the trial version is available here. Virtual Edition doesn't backup the physical host machine.

Virtual Edition doesn't work (in agent-less mode) with free VMware Server, and it doesn't work with "ESXi free". You will have to install agents in the virtual machine. In agentless mode it can be used either with Hyper-V or paid ESX version. In you configuration with Windows 2008 host, and VMWare Server, you can back up the host using Agent for Windows, and install two agents inside VMs running on the same host - this is allowed by a single "Advanced Server" license.
