Full backup fail on tape drive

Thread needs solution

I have been using Acronis for a couple of years and a couple of weeks ago I started getting write errors. It's a Dell LTO3 drive connected to a PE R710 server by Ultra320 SCSI. I am trying to backup only the C: drive. I have ver. 10 bld 13762. I have tried:

cleaning drive
several different tapes
dell replaced drive with new drive
deleted job and recreated it.

Have you already checked the troubleshooting steps in this article from our knowledge base? There you will find most common issues and solutions regarding tape drives.

If all the steps do not solve this issue, then please provide more detailed information about the used backup plan, backup scheme, vault type etc. So that it is possible to find the root cause of this problem.

Going thru the article it says to make sure the Removable Storage service is not disabled. I don't have a Removable Storage service. We are running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1. What should I do?

Thank you for updating this post.

As in Server 2008 R2 there is not longer an RSM service available you have two workaround options:

  • Install a local Acronis agent on this machine and run backups, using this agent to the tape drive. This does not need an RSM service.
  • Attach the Tape to another Windows machine, other than Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.

Additionally, I want to inform you, that our current product Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 does have its own RSM service and is able to run backups through Acronis Storage Node to an attached tape drive on Windows 2008 R2 Servers. Find more information in this article from our knowledge base.

Yes, we've been using the agent for about 2 years.

Nothing special on the backups

I uninstalled Acronis & reinstalled it and the backups are still failing. An error was logged in the Windows Application Error log that said:

The error is caused during the Volume Shadow Copy creation from the Acronis VSS Service. To solve this change the usage of VSS providers from Acronis VSS to Microsoft VSS. This will solve this issue. You find all instructions in this article from our knowledge base.

I didn't restart the Server, but I did go ahead and disable the Acronis VSS Provider service. After I disabled it I restarted the Acronis Managed Machine Service & the Acronis Management Server Service. I was then able to get a Full backup. But then last night it didn't do an Incremental backup. It said the media already has data on it and I had to click OK to clean tape, Retry with different media, or Cancel the job. How can I get it to append to the tape?

If I have understood correctly, the backup jobs are running now. When using a custom backup schema, it is possible that you could not use the existing full backup as source for the next incremental. You need to use the same backup job to keep the archive name. It is possible, that you have to begin a new backup chain.
