Migrating from old computer with hdd to new one with ssd

Thread needs solution

Hi everyone,

I have a 2011 toshiba portege R835 computer with 500GB hard drive and 8GB Ram. I have just purchased a Dell XPS 13 9350 computer which has 512 GB SSD (which comes with hidden partitions I believe) and 16GB Ram to replace it. Old computer is still working ok . I am wondering about the best way to move all my files, data and programs over to new computer. I have worked out that I need to follow the instructions in the "Migrating to SSD using the backup and recovery method" help chapter. However, it looks rather complicated for someone who is not familiar with this sort of procedure. In addition the Dell having hidden partitions makes it even more difficult. I can see myself ending up with a brand new computer that won't work and with the warranty voided. So I am thinking instead just to install the programs that I need on my new computer and then copy over the programme files . Any thoughts, recommendations anyone?

Hello David,

Just copying over the files isn't a very good idea because there is a big risk something will fail to work in the programs afterward (not all setting are transferred, the versions are slightly different and incompatible etc.)

Instead, If you have the space on an external drive (or network share or other storage) you can create an image of your entire  Dell XPS machine. This way, if something goes wrong, you will be able to restore it along with all the hidden partitions.

That said, the " backup and recovery method " remains the best way to transfer your system from one machine to the other. However, if you are uncomfortable with the procedure, I would suggest contacting our support team who can walk you throuhg the entire thing.

Thank you
