Adding a second nic into the vitual appliance ?

Thread needs solution

I contact you to have an information about the configuration of the network into the virtual appliance for VM Protect.

I would know if it’s a good idea to add a second vnic into the virtual appliance ?

For the explanation, I’ve a virtual appliance with 2 vNics.

A vNic into the management network to have the management access.

A vNic into the backup network to have a dedicated network for the backup’s flow.

The backup network is a complete dedicated network without routing between the “management network” and the “backup network”.

Thank you for your quick answer.

Hello Adehis,

Thank you for posting.

This is supported in vmProtect 8. You will need to make sure that the IP address of your backup location is specified correctly, so that the traffic is routed through the correct network.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hi Anton,

can you confirm that adding a second NIC works in VMP8?

Hi ece,

In our tests we have verified that working with 2 or more NICs in case of Virtual Appliance (or Windows Agent) does work correctly as long as the routing is set up properly. For example if you have 2 subnets: 192.168.x.x + 10.0.x.x, then by default traffic will go through 192.168.x.x interface as long as you use direct IP addressing (unless there are special routs between 192.168.x.x and 10.0.x.x subnets).

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

thanks for the answer.

By default we can see that there is one VMXNET3 NIC. But when trying to add another NIC I can only add a E1000 NIC. Any idea why it is not possible to add another VMXNET3 NIC?

Hi ece,

Yes, there is one trick here: the type of guest OS of the appliance should be changed to "Other 2.6.x Linux" which will enable adding VMXNET3 type of network card. You can check the instructions (steps 2 through 4) in the following KB article:

http://kb.acronis.com/content/32820

This article had been originally created for 7th version of vmProtect, but it also works for 8th version when you need to add new VMXNET3 NIC.

Thank you.
