attach virtual disk to acronis appliance

Thread needs solution

Hi,

1. Is it possible to attach a vmware virtual disk to acronis appliance and use it as backup destination?

2. Can I install Acronis Agent to a Windows VM and use it for backup? Is this safe?

Thanks,
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

1. Yes it is possible. The procedure is described here: http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/AVMP8/index.html#17287.html . Also remember to be careful when detaching such disk from appliance (once you don't need it for example) - you should unmount it first from the appliance console (in vSphere client) and only after that remove from the appliance configuration.

2. Yes you can, however you should take into account the fact that in case of Windows Agent installed inside a VM the direct SAN access (LAN-free) won't work in case you attach the same datastore LUN where this Windows VM resides (you will get kind of loop in this case and this is not supported by vStorage API). Also hot-add method will not work, i.e. vmProtect will not attach the backed up VMs disks for backups. Therefore the backup will be performed the slowest (among 3) methods of backup. The best way here is to install Windows Agent onto some physical machine or onto a VM which is not on the same host/cluster which VMs you need to back up. After that attach the datastore LUNs (over iSCSI or FibreChannel) to this Windows machine and vmProtect will be able to perform backups in LAN-free mode.

P.S. you can read additional details about the disk access transport methods here: http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vddk.pg…

Thank you.

Make sure disk size is minimum of 10GB. I made a mistake and set 5GB on it and it failed.
