Backup application server running MS SQL 2005 or 2008R2

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I'm testing trial vmprotect 8. I can't find any information about backing up Windows server running MS SQL 2005/2008R2. Is vmprotect support backup of MS SQL server? Any special procedues in order to backup SQL server?

thanks,
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

The application consistency inside the backed up VM is ensured by quiescing the file system and applications via MS VSS. This process is initiated when VMware creates quiesced (and without memory) snapshot of the VM (this type of snapshot is initiated by Acronis vmProtect). You can check more details here: http://www.vmguru.com/articles/data-protection/8-vmware-vss-explained

This means that the SQL server application consistency is ensured automatically since the snapshot read by Acronis vmProtect (which is put into the backup) already contains application-consistent state of the system inside.

The only concern here is the SQL logs truncation which you may need to perform after the VMware snapshot is created. Acronis vmProtect is capable for truncating Exchange server logs automatically, but for SQL server you may need to run a script via pre-freeze/post-thaw commands functionality provided by VMware tools: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cm… .

On our side we are planning to add this functionality (automatic SQL logs truncation) in the future versions of Acronis vmProtect.

Thank you.
