general questions about vmprotect 8

Thread needs solution

Hi,

While I'm testing the product, I have several general questions:

1. With "Single file backup scheme", if the archive file is corrupted for any reason, is there any "repair" tool available for recovery (either full or partial) OR I'll lose all?

2. If I create multipe backup tasks to backup the same VMs, for instance,
- Backup task1, backup VM1 to network-share-1, daily at 1 AM, everyday, CBT enabled
- Backup task2, backup VM1 (same VM) to network-share-2, daily at 6 AM, everyday, CBT enabled
Since both backup tasks have CBT enabled, will they work?
Basically, I just want to know if CBT will determine "what have been changed" according to backup archive being used or it will be affacted by other backup task.

3. Is there any way to send notification after a "Verify" task? OR will this be in the future?

4. I understand that there is a "Exchange backup agent" which can be installed to Exchange Server in order to overcome the UAC limitations. Beside this reason, is there any other benefit with this agent installed to the guest OS? (such as faster backup, etc)

5. when I created my first test backup, I select the vsphere host and multple VMs. Then, I saw one of the log saying that "backup was forced to sector by sector because of some reading problem". Then, I cancelled the backup and created a new backup task for one of the VM which I believed it was the VM having the error. However, I didn't see the same error again. I think that I may not understand the log correctly. My question is: is there any document available to help to understand how use/understand the log for troubleshooting?

6. How many backup tasks can run simultaneously or is there any benefit running tasks simultaneously in terms of speed?

7. If a VM is being backed up by vmprotect, can I do any of the following vm task on the VM:
- vmotion to different host or different VM data store
- create new vm snapshot or remove old snapshot (except the one created by vmprotect)
- revert back to other snapshot while keeping the snapshot created by vmprotect
- shutdown or restart the VM?
- any vmware task should not be done during the backup?

Thanks,
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

1. The archive corruption usually does not affect all the recovery points inside the archive, which means that in most cases you will be able to recover from most of the recovery points except for the corrupted one. In other words no matter which archive type you are using (Single file for all backups or legacy one) the corruption impact will be the same in both cases, i.e. the default archive format has the same reliability as the legacy one.

2. The CBT ID is recorded each time the VM is snapshotted. When the backup is performed it compares the last CBT IDs recorded in the backup and the current CBT ID of the VM. Then the ESX(i) host returns the sectors which were changed between these 2 CBT IDs. Therefore it doesn't matter if you backed up that VM by another task since the CBT ID will be unique one.

3. No, there is no e-mail notification for manual validation task execution. The e-mail notifications can be setup for backup tasks though which can perform automatic validation.

4. No - UAC workaround is the only reason to install this Agent.

5. The sector-by-sector backup may be caused by various reasons. This topic is covered in Antons' reply here: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/36869#comment-115397 . In general it depends on the particular snapshot state, so the issue may occur randomly (more likely while the backed up VM is under high load and less likely while it is under lesser load).

6. Yes there are benefits to run tasks simultaneously and you may notice significant total speed increase (especially if the bottleneck is the virtual disk reading speed). There can be run up to 5 backup tasks in parallel by default. This value can be changed through registry, it's not really safe to do that unless you have installed Acronis vmProtect onto a more powerfull machine (2+ Gb of RAM).

7. There are 2 exceptions here:
a) Storage vMotion which won't be possible as VMware won't let you perform it since the disks are opened for read (host vMotion will work fine though)
b) Revert to another snapshot or remove the old snapshot (which requires snapshot consolidation) as it also touches the base disk links and the backup will fail as the result

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

Thanks so much. You've resolved most of my concerns. I have another question:

Is it possible to initiate a saved tasks (e.g. verify task or backup task) from either vsphere host console/SSH shell or power shell? If it is possible, it will be very useful and given so much more flexibility to IT

Thank you
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

There is currently no publicly available command line interface for vmProtect. We do use command line scripts for internal QA tests automation, however these scripts are quite complicated ones and need to be adjusted for each particular environment separately. We of course consider adding the command line utility (which then can run either from ESXi host SSH shell or just from any Windows machine) into the officially supported features list, though these are plans for future versions only.

One thing I can think of is that you can enable the vCenter integration and access the UI of vmProtect right from the vSphere client (Solutions and Applications->Acronis vmProtect 8.0) which may be helpful for other vCenter admins when they need to run the vmProtect tasks.

Thank you.

Accessing UI in vmprotect seems to be the quickest way to get the job done here.
