port 111 requirement

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I'm current using VM appliance to do my backup. I would like to try to use Windows agent on my backup server instead. When I was trying to install vmprotect windows agent on my backup server which is running Windows 2008 R2 64 bit. I got error "Port 111 that is required for Acronis Portmap service is busy. Please free the port and then retry the installation". After some research, I found that vmProtect requires port 111 which is also a requirement for my CA Arcserve v12 (for my Tape backup). I have no choice of using Acrserve for my disk to tape backup. Is there any workaround?

Thanks,
Aldous

Hi Aldous,

The 111 port is a standard one for portmapper of RPC. This port cannot be changed and it serves for distributing requests to various RPC servers. In case of vmProtect this port is required for NFS server to work. Without Acronis NFS Server other components won't work either due to interdependancies, so disabling it will not help.

I'd recommended to check with Arcserve support what port 111 is really used for and whether it can be disabled. Typically it is used for NFS server but I'm not sure how it is related to tape backup in case of Arcserve.

Edit: one (may be not really convenient) workaround I can think of is to install vmProtect while Arcserve services are disabled (so that port 111 is free), then disable vmProtect services when you need Arcserve and vice versa disable Arcserve services when you need vmProtect.

Thank you.
