Is it worth to upgrade

Thread needs solution

Hey there,

we are currently using Advanced Backuzp V12.5

As we are under maintenance, it is possible to upgrade vo V15.

The question now is:
- are there any new features in V15 vompared to V12.5?
- is V15 mre stable than V12.5 was?
- which product is under development and gets bugfixes and new features? V15 only ? V12.5 only ? Both?
- is it possible to do an inplace upgrade?
- can we migrate the old archives, backup plans to V15 ?

Thanks in advance

S.

Hello Sven,

thank you for posting on Acronis forums!

- are there any new features in V15 vompared to V12.5?

Please refer to this compatibility list: https://kb.acronis.com/content/65304

- is V15 mre stable than V12.5 was?
- which product is under development and gets bugfixes and new features? V15 only ? V12.5 only ? Both?

V15 is now more stable: it is under development and gets new features and bugfixes. The V12.5 gets only critical bugfixes.

- is it possible to do an inplace upgrade?
- can we migrate the old archives, backup plans to V15 ?

Here are the upgrade paths: https://kb.acronis.com/content/65178

The existing backup plans are transformed into protection plans during the upgrade. Other older plans exported from Acronis Cyber Backup 12.5 cannot be imported to Acronis Cyber Protect 15.

Thanks Maria for the information.

The existing backup plans are transformed into protection plans during the upgrade. Other older plans exported from AcronisCyber Backup 12.5 cannot be imported to Acronis Cyber Protect 15.

This confuses me....
Does that mean that existing plans that are active are upgraded but I cannot load exported plans?

Some other points:
You know me now for years....so sorry, but I repeat it again.

What is the status of ABR-122336 (WOL)?
In March 2018 I was told "we are working on it"....

Status of ABR-63219 and ABR-111317 (commands after backup)?
Since 2018 I was told several times, that Acronis is working on it to realize a method of executing a command really at the end if all tasks of a plan are executed.
Any plans when it will come?

Is the bug still there, that if a backup fails, the command after backup is not executed?

Is there any method implemented, to clean up the databases and purge older entries?

One feature of 11.7 was, that it was shown if a plan´s options differ from the standard backup options.
This was extremely helpful if the standard options were changed.
The answer in 2018 was:
We may re-introduce the changes tracking when editing a backup plan, at some point in the future.
Did something more happen than writing this sentence?

What is the status of ABR-129139 (Search via "Started by" doesn't work for particular records - "Backup service", "On schedule", "Organization administrator") and ABR-308561 )The "Started by" filter doesn't display activities by keyword "On schedule")?

There is also a task that was created die to a bug reported by me: RM-727
What is the status of this ?

What is the status of ABR-213262 (email notifocation for mini plans)

You see that in the past few years I reported a lot, but......Is any of the upper mentioned points corrected in V15?

Thanks in advance

Sven

Hello Sven.

This confuses me....
Does that mean that existing plans that are active are upgraded but I cannot load exported plans?

Yes, exactly it is.

I checked your requests about desired feature requests.

ABR-122336 -> RM-356 [WOL]

ABR-308561 -> RM-2495 [Send notifications for mini-plans]

RM-727

As you can see, now all of them are moved to the road map, still not yet implemented but under consideration.

ABR-63219 and ABR-111317

ABR-129139

ABR-308561

We do not expect these features to be developed in the nearest future.

Hello Maria,

This confuses me....
Does that mean that existing plans that are active are upgraded but I cannot load exported plans?

Yes, exactly it is.

Okay, so there is no chance to setup a complete freshly installed Management Server without manually setup all the plans?
Quite hard stuff, that this was not kept in mind, that someone might want to do this.
As I as a custumer has no ability to get rid of old stuff in the database (I still have one zombie activity that tries to refresh a recovery point on a storage location that does not exist since months....).

Is it at least possible to continue the backups that are currently used in 12.5 or is that also not possible ?

ABR-122336 -> RM-356 [WOL]

ABR-308561 -> RM-2495 [Send notifications for mini-plans]

RM-727

As you can see, now all of them are moved to the road map, still not yet implemented but under consideration.

And at which point in the roadmap?
Under consideration sounds like "maybe we do it, but also maybe not..."

ABR-63219 and ABR-111317

ABR-129139

ABR-308561

We do not expect these features to be developed in the nearest future.

So the info that I was given several times since 2018 (regarding ABR-63219 and ABR-111317 I was told several times, that Acronis is working on it to realize a method of executing a command really at the end if all tasks of a plan are executed.) was simply wrong.......

Extremely disappointing......honestly spoken.

Maybe you overlooked the following questions:

Is the bug still there, that if a backup fails, the command after backup is not executed?

Is there any method implemented, to clean up the databases and purge older entries?

May I kindly ask for an answer on these questions?

Regarding upgrading to V15

Is it possible to

- do a complete fresh install of the management server
- setup existing storage locations
- add existing machines to this MMS and upgrade them to V15
- create new backup plans and continue an existing sequence of backups (so simply continue doing the backups in existing chains) ?

Thanks in advance

Sven

Hello,

may I push up this issue ?

I need answers - at least on the last questions whether the askes things are possible with V15.

Thanks

Sven

Hello Sven!

Due to your plans not being transferable between existing 12.5 and fresh 15 I'd suggest in place upgrade, with a backup/VM snapshot beforehand. If the upgrade fails just roll back.

As I understand inplace upgrade would preserve your existing plans, which would also allow the existing backup chain to be continued.

Getting rid of stuck activities has some related KBs (like this one). I also needed to do it several times.

Hello Peter,

that´s the problem with Acronis so often: there are no easy solutions for me as a admin and that´s really annoying and time consuming.

Well an in-place upgrade could work, and also the hack to remove the completed activities from the database.

But I think this will not solve the issue with my "zombie"....
I removed a storage location months ago but there is still an activity that tries to run each 60 days.
The error is "Activity "Refreshing Recovery Point" failed...."
I never setup such an activity.....

That´s another thing with Acronis: there happens so many stuff under the hood I cannot control....and in case of a problem I cannot solve it...

Regards
Sven

Hello Sven!

I agree that for such common annoyances there really could be a more straightforward approach. Like tell an activity to remove its existence from the universe whatever its apparent progress may be.

From what I understand of how it works the activity database is quite detached from the actual tasks that are running. Mostly it's there to disallow starting the same job twice (and therefore a stuck activity could be blocking an operation) and for agents and internal jobs to report their progress. So I deduced it's relatively safe to flip completion status and progress when it's stuck.

But I think this will not solve the issue with my "zombie"....
I removed a storage location months ago but there is still an activity that tries to run each 60 days.

If it's a repeated activity there's probably also an entry in the scheduler you can clear out with this. Not sure which machine to run it on if the agent that managed your past storage node no longer exists though. Can you tell from the activity which agent is trying to run it? Because these type of activities on my system are coming from individual agents, and usually fail when they can't connect to the storage node (which is expected if it doesn't exist)

Hello Sven.

Is the bug still there, that if a backup fails, the command after backup is not executed?

I can't agree that such behavior is a bug. If the post command depends on a backup (delete a previous, verify, convert, replicate etc.) then it is normal that a post command is not executed. If you describe not a backup-related command (e.g. close an already opened database or start a stopped service), then there should be a detailed feature request registered.

Please describe your use case in more detail for registering this feature request. Otherwise, please share with me any details (e.g. number/subject) of any known feature request.

Is there any method implemented, to clean up the databases and purge older entries?

What exact databases your question is about?

Is it possible to

- do a complete fresh install of the management server
- setup existing storage locations
- add existing machines to this MMS and upgrade them to V15
- create new backup plans and continue an existing sequence of backups (so simply continue doing the backups in existing chains) ?

As I understand, your main goal is to continue backups in existing chains. Thus, you will have to manually specify in each new backup plan the backup name of existing backups per each machine. However, I recommend that you simply create new chains with new fulls and incrementals, the old backups could be deleted later then.

Hello Maria,

Please describe your use case in more detail for registering this feature request.

This is the setting in my plan.
If the backup fails, the batch file is not executed.
As fortunately backup fail very rarely this cannot be reproduced easily.
But if it fails it is very obvious, as the batch unlocks a database that is locked prior to the backup .

What exact databases your question is about?

The database where the activities are stored.

However, I recommend that you simply create new chains with new fulls and incrementals, the old backups could be deleted later then.

Well but the deletion of the old backups is then a manual process.

Is it a such rare usecase that a customer wants to continue existring backup chains after a version change?

Regards
Sven

Hello Sven.

Thanks for describing the desired feature request in more detail. I made a request regarding it's registrationand will share the outcome with you.

The database where the activities are stored.

Here is how to decrease this database in Acronis Cyber Protect 15:

Hello Sven.

Thanks for describing the desired feature request in more detail. I made a request regarding it's registrationand will share the outcome with you.

We added your vote to RM-2373 [Pre/post commands for any backup step].

Moreover, I suggest using pre/post data capture commands instead of pre/post commands. This will help starting database if backup fails after VSS stage but before writing a backup. Could you please test this solution and share results?
