Simple data flow on backup and restore?

Thread needs solution

We have Cyber Protect 15 in an VMware environment and we would like to figure out how the data flow is going during backup and then later during restore. I have seen large diagram in manual but they are too complicated to understand since there is so many componentes. We only have the following:

VMware ESXi host
Acronis Management server
Acronis Agent for VMware appliance

SAN for VM storage for running machines backed up/restored (also appliance?)
NAS for backup location

How will the traffic go? We would like to find out where the bottlenecks are, especially during restore.

Hello!

Thank you for reaching out.

For on-premise, you can check that using the Wireshark program and reviewing the logs afterward. Usually, the connection from the Agent to the Management Server is failing on TCP ports 9877 or 7780.

Please check the network diagram of the program in the following user guide: Link to User Guide

Backup Process:

  1. The Acronis Agent for VMware appliance communicates with the VMware ESXi host to initiate the backup process.
  2. The agent collects data from the running virtual machines on the VMware ESXi host.
  3. Data is transferred from the ESXi host to the Acronis Management Server.
  4. The Acronis Management Server then directs the data to the designated SAN (Storage Area Network) for VM storage, where the backup is stored.
  5. Make sure to monitor the network traffic between the components during the backup process.

Restore Process:

  1. During the restore process, the Acronis Management Server retrieves the backed-up data from the SAN.
  2. The data is sent from the Acronis Management Server to the VMware ESXi host.
  3. The Acronis Agent for VMware appliance on the ESXi host receives the data and initiates the restoration of the virtual machines.
  4. Ensure to monitor the network traffic during the restore process, focusing on the communication between the SAN, Acronis Management Server, and VMware ESXi host.

Potential Bottlenecks:

  1. Network bandwidth between the components, especially during data transfer to and from the SAN and the Acronis Management Server.
  2. Performance of the SAN and NAS storage devices.
  3. Resource utilization on the VMware ESXi host, Acronis Management Server, and the Acronis Agent for VMware appliance.

To identify bottlenecks:

  1. Use network monitoring tools to assess bandwidth usage during backup and restore operations (Wireshark as mentioned above).
  2. Monitor storage performance on the SAN and NAS.
  3. Check resource utilization on the ESXi host, Acronis Management Server, and the Agent appliance during these processes.
