Tape rescan won't continue with next tape

Thread needs solution

I have recently started making replication backups to tapes (which contained some previously made full backups of a complete machine). Have backed up the same machine to HD  storage location with some full and some incremental backups (default Acronis setup) and than replicated it  (complete full and incremental ones) onto 2 tapes  (TAPE 001 and TAPE 004 ) on two separate occasions with the same task.

TAPE 001 was accidentally moved to free pool and so I went to rescan the tape to restore everything that was backed up previously. Upon finishing  75% of the task I was asked to insert TAPE 004. (why are the 2 tapes connected ? -because the replication backups are considered  one integral, not separate fulls )  I ejected TAPE 001 with button on the drive and inserted TAPE 004 and  pressed retry but the task would not continue still asking for TAPE 004.

Went to rescan TAPE 004 and than after a while it asked for TAPE 001. Have not yet inserted it to verify that it won't continue as was the case with TAPE 001 rescan and TAPE 004 continuation but I suspect it will be the same.

Why is it that rescan task would not recognize that other tape was inserted and continue. I have done inventorying of both tapes but it didn't help. How can I recover the content of the tapes?

EDIT:

After TAPE 004 rescan same thing happens. It asks for TAPE 001 and doesn't recognize it being inserted. Why doesn't the application eject the tape by itself when asking for the new one? Now it looks as if 1st tape is still present in the drive and I cannot force application to recognize insertion of the new one.

Hello Toni,

thank you for posting on Acronis forums!

There are three scenarios for you.

1) Ignore asking the next tape for rescan and continue rescanning a single tape.

2) Run inventory after ejecting the next tape and before continuing the rescan task.

3) Install Update 3 with a bunch of fixes for rescanning tape issues including auto-inventory.

What's new is that after the former tape backups were all deleted ( to start from scratch) from index, now after I rescan TAPE 001 it asks for TAPE 004 (TAPE 003 before)

Have inserted that  (and 003 as well) , without success.   Task won't continue.

To answer you suggestions

1) Ignore asking the next tape for rescan and continue rescanning a single tape.

How can I ignore?  There are 3 buttons : retry , cancel, properties. If I press retry when new tape is inserted i get green cycle spinning for 2 seconds and than same message again to insert TAPE 004. If I press cancel task is cancelled after a while, even with first (TAPE 001) tape inside.

2) Run inventory after ejecting the next tape and before continuing the rescan task.

You mean after INSERTING  the next tape? You cannot do any new task while tape is reported "in use" Doesn't do anything.

3) Install Update 3 with a bunch of fixes for rescanning tape issues including auto-inventory.

I have version Server version: 15.0.28035 which is I think the latest.

All my tapes are write protected, Anything to do with rescan task?

Tapes hold  replications from HD backups. How can I select that replications are not concatenated? When I go to restore it says they are incremental? I don't see the option in the replication task to make only full backups. I only see the option to select what is backed up from HD (all backups, only full, only last)  I am afraid to backup to multiple tapes so I don't get this problem of continuity with the rescan task, if I ever lose index on the computer.

Could you try rescanning multiple tapes containing tape replications and report back if the exchange of tapes is done properly (rescan tasks continue with the next tape)?

Hello Toni.

All tapes are rescanned one by one. Every rescan operation is a separate task. You should eject a previous tape after rescan is completed and then insert the one for rescanning.

The latest Update 3 with a bunch of fixes for rescanning tape issues is build # 28122.
