Arconis True Image 21 - Backup stops at preparing data

Thread needs solution

Hello all,

I have recently installed ATI 21 and I am trying to backup my pc.

It stops at preparing data and gets no further. It also cant make a clone of the HD.

When I run VSS doctor, it says theres an issue with minimum disk space on a partiton.

I also notice that windows backup and restore also doesnt work but file history does.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

Many thanks

Adam

Adam, welcome to these public User Forums.

If there are VSS issues such as insufficient free space then this can stop any operation that is trying to create a snapshot of the data on that drive, volume or partition.

If the VSS Doctor offers to try to fix any problems it identifies, then I would let it try to do so.

If there is truly too little free space on any individual partition, then you may need to use a partition manager tool such as the free MiniTool Partition Wizard software to start adjusting the size of your partitions to achieve a better distribution of free space among your partitions.

Note: Windows file history does not use VSS or create snapshots hence is not affected.

Thank you for the reply Steve.

By adjusting partitions, is there a possibility it could make the hard drive unstable?

Very frustrating I cant backup first!

Many thanks

Adam

Adam, ideally it is best to always have a backup before making any changes to partitions, so perhaps you should consider booting the PC from your Acronis rescue media and seeing if you can create a backup via that method?

What actual partition is being mentioned with regards to too little free space? Is it just a single partition or does this apply to more than one partition?

Thanks Steve.

Only one partition has too little space, I've attached a screenshot from the VSS Doctor.

Adam, just looking at the partition sizes in your image, it looks like you may have a redundant old recovery partition with the size problem?  You have 2 small partitions shown, 783MB with space issue, and 1023MB that is ok.

One quick way to see if that 783MB partition is causing a problem is to deselect it from your backup source selection (click on 'Full partition list' to see all hidden / system partitions).

To see the size of the active recovery partition, open an Administrator command or powershell window, then use the following commands:

diskpart

list volume

In the list volume output, look the label: Windows RE with the size of 1023MB (hopefully!).

PS D:\powershell> diskpart

Microsoft DiskPart version 10.0.19041.610
DISKPART> list volume
Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
  ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 C Windows NTFS Partition 200 GB Healthy Boot
  Volume 1 G SSD-Data NTFS Partition 263 GB Healthy
Volume 2 SYSTEM FAT32 Partition 260 MB Healthy System
Volume 3 Windows RE NTFS Partition 978 MB Healthy Hidden

DISKPART>

Thank you Steve.

I couldn't seem to see full partition list in ATI 21 I'm afraid.

Ive attached a screenshot of the volume list. No Windows RE, but there is one named Recovery.

Adam, to see the option for full partition list, you need to open the Source for your backup task (click on the Source panel).  See the images below showing the difference using the option makes!

Clicking on 'Full partition list' will cause the link to change to 'Short partition list' and will expand the list of partitions to show any hidden / system partitions (as shown below).

Thanks Steve - I completely missed that!

Ive given that a go.. See how I get on :-)
