Moving old Windows 10 system to new PC

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I'm really struggling to move my old system to a new PC. I did it years ago using "Bare Metal Backup & Restore" but I can't seem to find that in my 2021 version of True Image. I made a full backup of my old system disk to a removable USB hard drive but when I try to do a "Recover" on my new PC it won't recognize and read the backup from the old system. I've used the "Rescue Media Builder" and "Acronis Universal Restore". I've created the bootable rescue drive on 3 different media, including the USB hard drive with the backup on it, and they all boot my new PC just fine - but that's where it ends. I just can't get the backup to restore onto my new system (which I've also backed up just in case).

My last effort was to download the "Disk Director 12.5" to try. Still unable to get a restore completed.

Anyone have any tips, directions, help they can pass along?

Thanks,

Ron

Ron, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more information is needed to better understand what the issue here might be?

What are the base specs for the old and new PC's?
Do they both use the same CPU make, i.e. both Intel processors?
What version of Windows is on these PC's?
What differences in hardware components, in particular disk drives installed?
What BIOS mode do they use for booting into Windows?

Assuming that both PC's are currently working, then the BIOS mode can be found using the msinfo32 command within Windows.  Look at the BIOS mode value shown in the report right panel.  Ideally, both should show UEFI if the PC's are not old, otherwise you might see either Legacy or the name/make of the OS disk drive.

The actual process for migrating is fairly straight forward and is described in the AUR documentation.

See KB 65413: Acronis True Image 2021: Restoring to dissimilar hardware with Acronis Universal Restore and in particular review Steps 4 and 5 of this document.

Also KB 2149: Acronis Universal Restore

KB 36187: Windows activation required after restore with Acronis Universal Restore, cloning or converting backup to virtual machine

KB 45432: Acronis Software: Troubleshooting Universal Restore and Bootability Issues

KB 46405: Acronis True Image: Restored Operating System Fails to Boot

In outline, make a full Disks & Partitions backup of the old PC to an external storage drive.

Create the Acronis Rescue Media using the 'Simple' option.
Ideally, do this on the new PC after installing ATI 2021 on it.  This will then have all the device drivers needed for that new PC (captured from the Windows Recovery Environment).

Create the Acronis Universal Restore media (again on the new PC ideally).

Boot the rescue media using the same BIOS boot mode as the OS on the new PC used.

Restore the disk backup to the new PC (using the top Disk entry selected to avoid having to configure individual partitions).

Test booting the new PC to see if any issues are reported such as missing device drivers?

If issues with booting, then boot the PC using the AUR media and let it identify is any further device drivers are needed.

Thanks Steve,

Not sure exactly why but one of my recovery thumb drives finally booted up with the right Acronis Restore options and I was able to access my full backup from my old PC. I’m up & running on my new PC with only minor problems to work on. I’m not real happy with Dell as they removed the line-in & mic jacks on this desktop (Inspiron 3880) and I’ve been recording all of my vinyl records. I’ll be adding a new sound card with all the jacks on it. I couldn’t find any explanation as to why they did this online but did find some other people complain about it.

Thank you for your response. I’ll be saving the links in the event I need them in the future.

Ron, not good news about the absence of line-in. Rather than getting PCIe sound card, a USB DAC may be better value. You can find them on eBay and Amazon. There is a wide range of possible USB solutions.

Ian

Thanks Ian - I'm trying both. Not real satisfied with the SoundBlaster I got so will test the USB when it is delivered.
