ATI Backup with boot medium or within Windows?

Thread solved

Hi all,

I'm using ATI for more than 10 years. So far, I've backuped my Windows PCs (drives backup) fundamentally by using the bootable medium (linux).  Reason: I'm not sure whether a ATI backup within a running windows system makes issues during recovery.

I have searched for this topic without success so far.

Can anyone help me in this regard.
Every hint is appreciated and welcome.

Thx in advance

Rainer B.

Rainer, welcome to these public User Forums.

Acronis has been using the Microsoft VSS snapshot service for many years now to enable it to capture all data required for a successful backup image to be created and recovered.

The key advantage of doing backups within Windows is simply that of the extra caching and performance that this can lend to the process while at the same time allowing normal user operations to continue.

To put the above comments in context, I make regular scheduled backups on my own PC's which are all done from within Windows.

When intending to migrate to a new disk drive, i.e. to upgrade my OS SSD to a larger size, then I will always use the Acronis Rescue Media to make a separate full backup image to an external storage drive, then restore that new image to the new drive after changing the hardware.  I do this to avoid any confusion with my scheduled Windows backup tasks that can happen when restoring one of these.  Note: such a migration still requires that I reselect the source drive for my tasks due to the GUID change when changing the drive.

Hallo Steve,

thx a lot for your response.

Nevertheless a question.

Are your statements also valid for backup the system drive C:?
What happens, when windows during backup the system drive, is doing tasks which are changing the registry or other system relevant entries?

Bottom line:  Can I do any actions with windows (Installs, uninstalls etc.) without have a risk to have in inconsistent backup?

Thx and best regards from Germany

Rainer

Rainer, yes, my statements are valid for the system drive.  Any VSS snapshot is a capture of all data as it exists at a specific point in time and Acronis ensures that such snapshots do not cause any fatal errors or issues if there are significant changes underway on the computer such as Windows Updates being installed etc.

My personal approach for Windows backups is that I schedule them for times when there should be minimal system activity, normally for early morning when I am thinking of getting out of bed and there should be no updates, installs etc being performed - this is to keep things as simple as possible.

As with any backup process, it is best to adopt a 3-2-1 approach, i.e. 3 different backups to at least 2 different locations and with 1 backup kept offline and / or off-site for best security against natural threats such as fire, flood, theft etc.

Hello Steve,

thx a lot for your excellent explanations, hints and tipps.

This helps me a lot!

Merry christmas from Germany.
