DD11 - anyone running OS Selector setup from Win 7?

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I "upgraded" to DD11 as I've been without DD10 since upgrading to Win 7 x64. I'd been using the old OSS anyway. Now I've "upgraded" and although OSS recognises Win 7 now, there are still lots of problems (see other posts)

Can anyone run the configuration tool from within Windows 7? I'm getting errors about missing configuration files etc. OSS is set up and I've uninstalled and reinstalled enough for one day.

This is one of those products where you get it working, and then try not to touch *anything* unless you feel like wasting another day getting your computer back...

Agreed DD11's OS Selector caused me a days work to restore a working set-up.

This seems to be the norm :-\

I am trying to dual boot W7-64 bits with XP Pro. I used to dual boot XP Pro with XP64 and was successful for the most part with the occasional MBR3 error after a defragmenting of c:\
I have created a separate 850 MB partition on the XP hard drive exclusively to install OSS from DD11 (which is installed inside XP Pro on the C:\ partition.
I have W7-64 and XP Pro each in a 60 GB partition on two separate physical drives. The menu installed perfectly in its own partition and I can get in and out of XP without any issues. HOWEVER when I boot W7 from OSS Explorer does not start and W7-64 flashes a message that software is the cause of the malfunction, closes Explorer and the message repeats as many times as I try to launch Explorer. The computer is accessing the Internet as I see downloads of program updates going.

The worst problem I face is that upon exiting W7-64 I absolutely cannot get back into the OSS. I get a message about "no load command found" and after booting from the rescue disk I have to reactivate the menu because I cannot even get to XP using the rescue disk. When I reactivate the computer flashes all sorts of errors about the kernel and Linux (????) and after 4 or 5 mysterious error messages I am able to get back into XP Pro where I can re-activate OSS.

In the forums I saw the recommendation from MudCrab about the separate partition so as to avoid defragmenting OSS. It does not seem to do much when W7 is involved.

I am at the point where if it weren't for expensive Nikon film scanners I own that cannot work with anything later than XP I would just stop using OSS and XP Pro completely. Am I alone in my misery? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. From what I've been reading here installing OSS from within W7-64 is likely going to pose a bigger problem.

Try disabling the CD-ROM support in OSS.

Can you post a screenshot of what DD shows for the drive(s)?

Can you attach a copy of the BOOTWIZ.OSS file (instructions can be found here)? It may help to see it.

I had a similar situation with my old (still working fine) HP scanner. HP did not create any Vista or Windows 7 drivers (no surprise). My solution was to put my XP into a VM and use the scanner there. It works just fine and doesn't require a dedicated computer or reboot.

Mud Crab, OSS is really testing my patience. CD Rom suppoort was desabled (defult). I reinstalled OSS in its own partition but this time I did so from within W7-64 and making W7-64 the "default" O/S. If Acrobat ever gets its act together with Office 2010- 64 bits I'll live with the few idiosyncrasies of the new O/S just to stop the suffering!
There was nothing I could do to make OSS work installing it from within XP Pro in this same isolated "drive"I created in the XP physical drive following your suggestion. It cost me hours of rebuiding and booting from the rescue disk to get back into the computer after each experiment.
Attached is the renamed bootwiz.oss file you asked for a while back. I followed your detailed instructions and extracted it from the tiny separate drive I created for OSS. Also attached is a pdf showing the drive arrangement from a DD11 screen capture.
The latest experiment is better but still not right. I am now able to boot in and out of W7-64 using OSS. However, when I boot into XP Pro, after I exit and reboot the sytem I get "Acronis Loader fatal error boot drive (partition) not found. Press to try to boot your OS".
When I hit Enter I get back into W7-64 (an improvement over reaching for the rescue disk) but I cannot ever get OSS to work again unless I "reactivate" the OS Selector inside W7-64 before I exit and reboot. Once I exit from XP Pro the next time the fatal loader error comes up again.
This is beyond my ability to straighten out. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the tip on the Nikon film scanner. It works perfectly in W7 using the XP Mode VM.

Is the same build of DD that's installed in Windows 7 installed in XP?

It's possible that the Disk Order (swapping) feature isn't working correctly on the system. Does it boot correctly back into OSS if you shutdown XP and turn off the computer (complete power off by switch or unplug), wait 30 seconds or so, and then turn it on?

If you select to boot into XP and then immediately begin pressing F8 to get the Safe Mode menu and then reboot the computer from the Safe Mode menu (don't boot into XP), what happens? This could help determine if the problem is in XP or if it's the booting process itself.

After I waited 30 seconds and tried to restart, I was not able to get into anything. I eventually managed to get into W7 with the rescue disk just long enough to uninstall OSS, wipe the little partition clean and then delete it permanently. I also wiped XP32 SYSTEM clean, lost 3-4 weeks of e-mail and have switched permanently to W7-64. I'll live with the shortcomings of Acrobat Writer because I can't take any more of the Acronis OSS malfunctions. Whatever the issue is, OSS worked fine with XP32 and XP64 but never worked right with W7-64. DD11 is a good piece of software but I can't say the same for the OSS. I appreciate your trying to help.
