DD11: Reactivating OSS when an operating system install replaces the MBR.

Thread needs solution

How can I reactivate OSS if an operating system install replaces OSS in the MBR so that my machine must boot directly to that operating system ?

When I use the Boot Rescue Disk for DD11 it boots successfully into DD11 on my rescue disk, but I do not see OSS anywhere. How can I invoke it at bootup time so I can get back my multi-boot menu ?

I haven't tried this yet, but you may be able to restore the MBR from a TI backup taken after OSS was activated. Otherwise, you're kind of stuck with having to manually boot into Windows (one with OSS installed) or installing DD & OSS in the new OS (assuming it's Windows) to reactivate it.

Hopefully, Acronis will release an update soon that allows adding the OSS programs to the DD CD.

Wow ! I hate to say this but this is very poor. It is impossible to use such as product as OSS in DD11 if there is no way to start it from a CD at boot time in case it gets replace in the MBR. I am forced by Acronis to look for other solutions for my multi-boot system and to ditch OSS.

And the ridiculous thing is - you can't even use your old DD10 boot CD, because it asks for the OSS serial number! I am not about to type in the 80 character serial number every time I need to use the product.

Who beta tested this? Didn't these issues come up?

You can't use the DD 10 CD to reactivate OSS 11. At least, it failed when I tried it.

OSS 11 was not publically beta tested. Acronis removed it from DD 11 so it wasn't included in the DD 11 beta. The issue would most definately have come up if tested.

Hi Mudcrab,
You're right about the OSS 10 CD.

Surely someone in Acronis would have tested this - or even thought about it - but then again...

I think it's time to bail out.

OSS was not slated to be in DD11, and due to 'public demand' was hastily put back in to the release version. So apart from making it W7 friendly, not much else happened to it.

Whether this will be addressed at a later stage remains to be seen.

What also happened to it was that the functionality which allowed one to start it from CD and reactivate it so it installed itself back in the MBR was removed. Now that's real progress !
