Disk Director 10.0 support for ext4 filesystem?

Thread needs solution

Is there any plany to support the ext4 filesystem under 10.0?

My 10.0 DD can see the partitions as 'ext3' only.

OpenSUSE 11.2 is out, and the new default is 'ext4'.

I use my DD software to help maintain a multiboot win/linux system.

Thanks for any info!

Hello Rob,

Thank you for your timely question, this information should shared since this file system becomes rather common.

Our developers are working to implement the Ext4 file system support. Most probably, it will be implemented for Acronis Disk Director Suite 11.0, or for one of the subsequent updates to Acronis Disk Director Suite 11.0.

We are not planning to add the Ext4 file system support to Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0.

Please do not hesitate to ask additional questions if the provided information is not clear or you need a further assistance.

Thank you.

What is Windows 7 and what is ext4? Never heard?

Windows 7 is the newest version of the Windows operating system and was released on October 22, 2009. Ext4 is an update to the Linux ext3 file system and is used by the latest Linux distributions.

It is important (for anyone using one of the recent Linux versions) that support be added for Ext4 in DD asap. I am disappointed to learn that they do not plan to include it in an update to DD10. I use a multi-boot setup, but Acronis DD at present simply designates the Ext4 partitions as "unspported file systems" - thus no resize etc. One can use Gparted etc. but this support should be in what is after all the flagship product!

I believe Acronis was taken by surprise when WIN7 and ext4 came around the corner.

I want to add my push for full ext4 support as well as ext5 (swap) support.

I have Windows 7 installed on a Disk Director 10-formatted partition in a multi-boot with XP. Win7 operates extremely slowly compared with the XP on the same computer. Also, the Windows Experience Index doesn't get past the first 1 or 2 tests before it fails. Is it possible that one or both of these two problems could be caused by a partition that was not formatted entirely correctly to meet the needs of Windows 7?

Is the problem of compatibility with Windows 7 that:

  1. Disk Director 10 cannot be successfully installed within Windows 7, OR
  2. Is it true that a partition created by Disk Director 10 within XP or using the Bootable Rescue Media (how I did it) and then used to install Windows 7 will corrupt the installation of Windows 7 in some way?

My computer is a T6520 eMachine (AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.39GHz processor with 1.5 GB DDR and a ATI Radeon HD 4650 Display Adapter).

I have two suggestions that might make small improvement to the forum. One is to include a TAB function in the rich text editor. The other is to change the text on the button below the comment window from "Save" to either "Send" or "Submit." The word "Save" doesn't adequately describe the action.

Edwin:

Disk Director 10 (DD) NTFS formatting is the problem. While it sort of worked with Windows XP, allowing DD to format an NTFS partition will lead to corruption with Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. It is OK to let DD create partitions but then you should allow the Windows 7 installer to format the new partition(s).

If you are going to do any partition management tasks later on it is better to use older tools like DD to create partitions. An advantage of creating partitions with DD is that they will be cylinder-aligned (starting sector offset of 63-sectors), which is maximally compatible with existing third-party partitioning software and with Acronis True Image.

What ever happened to this? It's been three years since version 11 was released and 3.5 years since this thread, and still there's no ext4 support or a new version of Disk Director.

I guess it's safe to assume that Disk Director will NEVER get the ext4 support that was promised four and a half years ago, if there's ever even a new version of the product. I'm still stuck booting into a Linux live flash drive to run GParted.
