Disk Director 11 flaky on external USB drives

Thread needs solution

Been playing with this software for days now (with ATI 2012) and seem to have got it working fairly well.

Disk Director 11 does not work reliably with external USB drives (usually freezes the system and I have to hard power off).
My work-around solution is to only perform operations on my external drive from within the bootable CD.
ATI 2012 will then do backups to this drive OK - but DON"T make the mistake of resizing any partitions on this external drive; after already setting up your backups on this drive in ATI 2012.
This will make your PC unable to load Windows (XP) completely - screen freezes and your only option is to (once again) hard power off.

I have NEVER had to do so many hard-power off retries to get software working. This can't be good for your PC.
Acronis True image 9 was good, 10 even better. Since ATI10, all later versions have been released prematurely - way before all the bugs have been found - let alone fixed.

Acronis is still a good backup solution, but yeah, don't buy ANY new software until it's been out there at least 1 year. Seems like more and more developers now-a-days rely on paying customers to do their beta testing!

An update on my last post:

This is one flakey POS!

Disk Director 11 does not even work reliably on internal hard drives. Just tried to resize a partition, and once again - screen freeze. Only option: Hard Power Off!

Even from the bootable CD it is flakey: after you reach the initial Acronis screen and select 'Disk Director 11 Update 2', it will intermittently refuse to load. This time I had to hard power off (3 times) before it eventually decided to load. Once loaded from the CD it does seem to perform OK.

I would go back to Disk Director Suite 10 (which was rock-solid), except this version is not compatible with TI 2012.

Maybe it performs OK in Windows Vista/7?

This version has been out for over 1 year, so maybe my problems with this software are related to ATI 2012 (which has been released)
