Frustration with Copy Partition

Thread needs solution

I'm willing to accept that I'm doing something wrong here, but Disk Director won't tell me why I can't do it.

I'm trying to copy a 136GB NTFS partion with only 26GB used to a completely empty, completely different 75GB disk drive.

I select the partition, select Copy, then DD locks the partition

DD then shows me an overview of my drives with the destination drive "overlined" in green. If clock on that partition the Next button remains greyed out, despite the fact that the 25GB of used source would easily fit in the 75GB free space.

So I am forced to click cancel at which point the source partition values and graphical representation instantly change to 136GB used of 136GB! At the very least this last happening is strange.

I've also tried the same sort of operation in True Image Home 2009 with the disk clon wizard, with the same lack of success. BTW why isn't there a disk clone feature in DD?

I'm also surprised that there is no later update to DD since the 2007 2,160 build. I can't believe that there haven't been any bugs since then :-)

Have you run chkdsk /r on the partition you're trying to copy? Are there any bad sectors or file errors? If so, that may be causing the problem.

If you've only tried from Windows, try booting to the DD CD and seeing if that works. Try the Safe Mode version if the Full Mode version has problems.

You can download an updated ISO file of the CD version of DD from your Acronis account and create a new DD CD from it. This version contains more drivers than the one created using the installed version of build 2,160.

DD doesn't support Cloning, only copying of partitions.

Tried a disk check and it threw up nothing.

I downloaded the DD ISO and booted the machine from that. It found nothing, literally!

"Acronis Disk Director Suite has not found any hard disks E000101F4"

Which is a bit bizarre as Windows and DD running on Windows sees three drives. A quick Google for E000101F4 highlight lots of problems when running from within Windows, but nothing obvious when using the bootable media.

BTW all the drives are SATA.

Does the Safe Mode verison of DD also not find any hard drives?

For the Full Mode version from the CD, have you tried the quiet acpi=off noapic option detailed in Section II of the Read Before You Post thread?

Unfortunately, at no point do I get any "Full", "Safe" or "Boot into Windows" options. The GUI starts, then the error mesage box appears. Confirming at that point just resets the PC.

I'm going to try the DD bootable on another PC today for comparison.

If you don't get the Safe Mode option when you boot the DD CD, create a new DD CD using Media Builder and make sure to include both the Full and Safe Mode versions.
