How to Copy a Partition with Windows 7 on it?

Thread needs solution

Hi

I got a new SSD drive and want to move my windows 7 partition to this new drive. I tried to use Disk Directors Clone(or copy...forgot what it was called) option. So it went ahead a copied the partition to my new drive.

When I try to load windows 7 up on the new drive I get to the screen where it asks me to choose my windows 7 user account. When I choose my user it goes to another screen that just says "setting up desktop" after like 5 mins it goes to another screen saying it is doing some customizations for some web thing.

It never leaves that screen(was on the screen for like 20mins and then gave up).

Can you not copy windows partitions to a new hard drive with Disk Director 11? Do I need a product like true image?

That usually happens if the drive letter assigned to the Windows partition is incorrect (usually caused by letting the source Windows see the new drive before cloning).

You should be able to fix this with DD. Start DD and select the Disk Layout (link is in the top-right of the DD window) for the cloned Windows. The drive letters will show for that Windows. Set the Windows partition drive letter to the correct value (most likely C:).

Otherwise, you could clean the drive and start over. Do the clone from the DD CD and remove (or disconnect) the original drive before booting the clone.
