Installing Multiple OSs on a single HD using ABR11
I use 2 different configurations of XP and one version of Linux/Ubuntu 11 on my computer. Currently, each of the three OSs are on separate HDs and I control booting through BIOS. I have ABR images for each XP OS configuration and a new installation DVD for Ubuntu 11. I want to put all three OSs on one single HD. So far I have tried putting the two versions of XP on the same HD in separate primary partions and then installing ADD11 and OS Selector but have experience Hang problems.
What is the correct method for breating a single HD with these 3 OSs in their current form?

You should be able to accomplish what you want. You can restore them in either order (I use XP and then Vista in the example below).
This is what I would recommend:
- Start with a blank (no partitions) new drive.
- Make sure the other drives with XP and Vista are disabled or disconnected.
- Restore the XP image to the new drive (set the partition size as desired). Make sure the partition is Active.
- Reboot to the new drive. If XP doesn't boot up correctly you may need to do a boot repair.
- Once it's booting correctly, proceed to Vista.
- Boot to the DD CD and Hide the XP partition.
- Restore Vista image to the new drive (set the partition size as desired). Make sure the partition is Active.
- Reboot to the new drive. If Vista doesn't boot up correctly you may need to do a boot repair.
If you run into any errors, post back with them. Most booting problems can be fixed without too much trouble.
Test that you can successfully switch between XP and Vista by doing the following:
- Boot to the DD CD.
- Set the partition you want to boot Active.
- Set the partition you are NOT booting as hidden. For example, if you're booting into XP, the XP partition will be Active and the Vista partition will be hidden.
Do the above and boot into XP and Vista. This is an important step because it allows you to know that each Windows is independent and working before installing OSS.
Install OSS:
- Boot to the DD CD and make sure both Windows partitions are not hidden. Don't skip this step or you'll run into a bug in OSS.
- Set the Windows partition you want to boot as Active.
- Reboot into Windows.
- Install OSS. It should find both XP and Vista and create the menu entries.
Note: I recommend that you do a custom install of OSS and select a non-OS partition for the OSS files. This can help avoid problems since they are less likely to be moved or corrupted on a data partition. A small (@200MB) dedicated partition is even better, if you have the room.
