Lost my unallocated space - Disk Director 10

Thread needs solution

Hi

My old XP Labtop ran out of space on drive c: so I used disk director to free up 10 GB vom virtual drive D: and move it to C:

it did not finish, I had a reduced D:, then I saw 10 GB of unallocated and my old Drive C:

I wanted to add the unallocated space to drive c:
received a message that the disc c: had errors and I needed to run chckdsk first
which I did and if fixed some issues that did not look critical
when I rebooted, I could not find my 10 GB anymore to add them to drive C:

so, any ideas? where has it gone, how can I recover it?

thanks for any hints
Silvia

Can you post a screenshot of what DD shows for the drive and also one of what Disk Management shows?

Hi
Thanks, attached are the screenshots. I had removed Disc Director Installation in order to safe space on c, and used my boot disk. So I could not take a screenshot, took a foto, hope you can read it. Also first thing I did was to try to reinstall the full suite with my old installation file. And I get an error message, which is also attached. And yes, I am admin user.

Thanks, Silvia

Partition F: looks to be where your space went. Are the contents of F: and G: the same? I assume they are and that DD didn't finish with the space relocation (F: has some problems, according to the Disk Management screenshot). If everything looks okay with G:, I think you should be able to delete the F: partition and then resize C: into that space.

For the DD installer problem, have you tried redownloading it from your Acronis account? Maybe the file you're using is corrupted.

Hi
You're right, I guess there was only one HP Recovery partition before. Although, strange why it made a copy and it does not have all 10 GB that I "lost". I don't see the problems on F:? It says "healthy", doesn't it? Oh you mean because in the summary it says 7.22 GB and at the bottom diagram it shows 11 GB?

Not sure how these automatic partitions work and what they do, is it not possible some processes have references to F: which get lost if I delete it?

Good idea about download, I tried, saw a download file, but then I get the attached error message. So either it has been too long (2009) or there is an issue on the website.

Thanks,
Silvia

The problem with F: is that the partition size is one thing and the file system size is another. Usually, the file system fills the partition.

I doubt anything in Windows is referencing anything on F: or G:. In any case, you only need one Recovery partition.

I suspect the "copy" of the Recovery partition was not supposed to be there. DD moved/copied it down to the new spot (G:), but didn't remove it. If DD had finished correctly, it should have deleted it and then expanded C: to use the space. For what it's worth, I prefer doing each of these steps manually so I have control over them instead of giving DD a complicated set of operations to do and having it run automatically.

Have you tried downloading the DD file with IE (just in case FF is having a problem with it)?

If you're using a download manager you could try direct and see if that makes a difference. Some download managers can cause problems.

Hi

Sorry, it took some time, here's my update. I have deleted one of the Recovery partitions, after which I could see the unallocated space right after Drive C: in the disc doctor overview.

Then I configured for all unallocated space to be added to Drive C:
The operation could not be completed, it said I had disk problems and needed to run chkdsk.

Which I did on all drives. But I still get the message when i try to add the unallocated to Drive C:

See the attached pictures, I don't really understand why it tries to move volumes. All the unallocated space comes right after c:, so why would it even try to move E: Data? And if I interpret the messages correctly, it doesn't have an issue with Drive C: but rather with Drive D: I hope you can read the picutres, you should be able to zoom in, so you can also see the summary at the bottom of the picture. Sorry it's in German.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Silvia

Did you only resize C: to use the unallocate space next to it? Or did you tell DD to also take space from E:?

Hi

I only gave one task, clicked on C:Drive, said "change size", click on "add all unallocated space", and go. It showed 1 pending task and when I said execute, it listed the 5 or 7 steps (don't remember exactly how many).

So it should in my opinion not even touch anything except C: and the unallocated, should it? And I tried more than one time. Maybe I should try tonight again, now that the solar eclipse is over ;-)

Silvia

Don't use the "add all unallocated space" option -- it may try to get some from the end of the drive or between partitions. Just do a regular resize on the partition by dragging the right edge of the C: partition to fill the adjacent unallocated space.

I watched the eclipse yesterday afternoon and got some nice pictures -- almost a perfect ring from my viewpoint.

Hi

Thanks, that looked much better and indeed it only scheduled 2 tasks. But then when extending Volume C: to 53 GB I get the error message again "error in file system. Use a tool to check and correct errors" (translated from German) ;-((

Wow you saw the eclipse, I just saw awesome pics on the web. here in Switzerland it was 3.30 am in the night when it happened.... wrong place to be for yesterday ;-)

Silvia

But in the display of volume overview and also in disk manager it always says "no errors" for all volumes.....

Does the partition have any bad sectors on it (the chkdsk output would show this)? Bad sectors can cause problems when DD is trying to resize a partition.

Hi
Does chkdsk write the info to a file that I can find or do I have to run it again with a special parameter?

thanks
Silvia

It saves it in the Event Log, but it may be easier to just run it again on the drive and get it.

Hi - sorry, I was too busy these days. I finally managed to extend my C-Drive. I have no clue what it was. Many unsuccessful tries, ran chkdsk multiple times. Finally, when i managed to extend it, I did not allocate the whole remaining space, but only about 80% of it. Not sure if that is what made the difference.

Now one problem remains, I ca't reinstall Acronis Disk Director. In the Programs there is still a folder called Acronis, but only with a media rebuilder and a link to the website. All other program components have been removed. When I try to remove it in the uninstall software control panel, I get the attached message. And when I try to install it, I can't do so because the installation program says, it's already installed.

Any ideas what I can do to remove the remainders and re-install?
Thanks, Silvia
