I am interested in buying Disk Director 11 because it has Acronis OS selector (AOSS). I went to the net and download 134 pages on this AOSS 8.0. Lot of information. Not a single example with what to do for a simple system with 2 operating systems. I say this document has failed many users like me. I expect Acronis to provide a better user's manual than this.

Can some one please list step by step procedure for a newbie to set up two operating systems on a PC?
Let's say that we bought a PC that already has Windows XP on it (say drive C). Now we want to add Windows 2000 onto another partition. I will create another primary partition D and will load windows 2000 on it. If I simply create D: and load Windows 2000 on it, the result is disappointing since Win XP will take over, and Win 2000 is corrupted, or vice versa. That is why we need AOSS.
Should I install AOSS onto the drive C (with Win XP) before I create a partition D. What do I have to do to D so that this partition will allow me to boot Windows 2000? How do I set this AOSS up?
Can anyone help?

I did download a trial version of Acronis OS selector, and somehow after loading it, I could not get back to my Vista OS. I had to use Hiren;s disk to go in and delete the FAT partition created by Acronis OS selector. What a nightmare.

If OSS didn't properly recognize Vista on your system then it's off to a bad start. OSS does have some detection issues that Acronis has never addressed. OSS also has quite a few bugs which Acronis has not fix (and probably never will). Normally, what I recommend is doing the following after OSS is installed for the first (original) OS and working correctly:

  1. Make a backup of the entire system so you can easily revert if it becomes corrupted.
  2. Make sure you have a DD CD that includes the OSS programs. You need to be able to boot to the CD and reactivate OSS.
  3. Deactivate OSS (don't uninstall it). Select the existing Windows as the default.
  4. Boot to the DD CD and set up the partitions as required for the new Windows. If installing Windows, make sure to set the new Windows partition<em>Active</em> and Hide any other Windows partitions.
  5. Boot to the Windows CD/DVD and install it. Make sure to select the destination partition (which should be <em>Active</em>). I recommend letting the Windows installer do a quick format of the destination partition.
  6. Windows should install normally. When it's finished and working correctly, boot to the DD CD and reactivate OSS.
  7. Reboot to OSS.
  8. Edit each Windows menu entry as required to set the partitions hidden as needed. For example, for the original Windows, you may want to hide the new Windows partition. I recommend hiding other Windows partition from the one that's booting since it helps avoid problems.

These are just general guidelines. Depending on the specifics of your installs different instructions may be required.
