Windows 7 + Disk Director build 2160 - New "Advanced Format" for WD 20EARS
I created partions in Windows 7 with Acronis Disk Director build 2160 for hard disk Western Digital WD 20EARS and have a question?
Does Acronis made them correct in new format 4k or don't ?
How can I check this ?
Thanks.

You are incorrect about 4K format being [strictly] a Windows 7 format.
Vista also supports 4K sector drives. Please read all you can on the Caviar Green drives on Western Digital's website. There is clearly mentions one will not have a problem installing Vista on a single partition on a single 4K sector drive. The problem would be with imaging software (like yours) and Windows XP.
As a matter of fact, WD offers an alignment tool that uses YOUR product as its base. The only problem for me is that I am using the Caviar Green drives on an Intel RAID5 array, and the alignment tool is locked to only run against WD drives, yet the drives are 'hidden' behind the RAID and so the tool won't run against the RAID; it doesn't see the RAID as a WD drive.
I was hoping to use Disk Director with latest build to fix the alignment issue, since I am exhibiting performance issues that I did not have for a RAID0 configuration on older drives on this same MOBO, but since you are behind the 8 ball, no go there.
You've got a great product, but it is imperative you keep up with the technology, as consumers and businesses depend on products like yours to stay in business. File based backup/restores have long been obsolete, so maintaining proper partition structures when restoring is imperative.

I have a similar issue. First of course that the drives are not recognized behind the raid5 but also that with a raid you need to align them not just to the 4096 byte sectors but to the stripe size aswell.
However since the stripe size is usually multiple of 4096 if you align it to the stripe size it will be aligned to the sectors aswell.
I would like an alignment tool where I can specifiy alignment-"size" for instance beeing able to align it to a MiB (1048576bytes) would solve all alignment issues with advanced format drives, SSD and Raids :) You might lose half a MiB per partition but that is not really an issue with todays capacity.
I have tried to align my drives manually by calculating the required starting offset sector but no software allows me to move a partition to a specific sector (they only allow an accuracy down to MB).
Also I cannot move or align GPT drives for some reason...
So wishlist for acronis..
1. Allow to specify alignment-"size" from 2048 bytes through normal stripe sizes (32kb,64 kb etc) up to 1 MiB.
2. Beeing able to move a partition to a specific numerical sector.
3. Full support for the above with GPT drives and partitions.

Hello Michael,
Thank you very much for your suggestions, I've forwarded them to the responsible department. Probable all these features will be implemented in future versions of Acronis Disk Director.
Please reply to this thread if you have any additional questions.
Thank you.
