32 GB USB stick formatted as acronis bootable rescue media does not show as a boot option

Thread needs solution

Greetings,

I have an HP Elitebook 8470p that I am trying to capture an image of.

I used Tools->Rescue Media Builder ->my usb flash drive.  It runs and give a success message.

Have my bios properly configured to show usb devices as boot devices.  Shutdown computer.  Power on.

No USB device listed.  Shutdown.  Plug in a usb 1 TB drive.  Power up and it gives me the choice of the USB 1 TB as a boot drive.

Shutdown.   With a different 32 GB USB stick, create another Rescue media.   Shutdown.  Power on, no choice of USB drive.

Format usb stick as fat32 (Not using Rescue Media Builder).  Reboot and USB stick is a choice now.

What is the issue?  Once I make the USB stick a Media Rescue device using Acronis, it no longer shows as a boot device.

thanks for any help.

Darryl, not all USB sticks are equal unfortunately and some sticks work fine and other simply refuse to do so.

Please see KB document: 58108: Acronis Software: Using USB Sticks with More than 32GB Capacity which gives further information about other limitations in this area.

The USB rescue media must be formatted for FAT32 and must show as being removable media in order to be used.

A USB stick of 1GB is the recommended size to use for rescue media.
