ATI 2016 - Which partitions to back up - Windows 10

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have observed that if you "Backup" your Windows 10 operating system, live, from within Windows, using ATI 2016, you are offered the opportunity of backing up your "Operating System", and the "System Reserved" partitions- Two partitions!

However, if you backup, using a bootable CD/DVD media, you are offered the opportunity of backing up your "Operating System", the "System Reserved" and the "Recovery partitions" - Three partitions!

Looking at Disk management (attached), I see that there is also "Unallocated space"!

Back in the days of Windows 8.0/8.1, on a Microsoft Windows forum, I asked the question: Do Microsoft ever update the "System Reserved" partition. I was given a categoric assurance, from some authoritative member of MS, that the "System Reserved" partition, was never updated - It's state never changes, from the release date!

If this is correct, I see no point of backing up this partition (the "System Reserved"partition) more than once, or perhaps twice, in a different location!

The "Recovery" partition, is something new to me, so I have no knowledge, if this is changed, via updates, or other mechanisms!

Given all of this I am a little confused, by the fact that the live and boot media backups methods offer different options.

As an aside, in the past, I have always found it easy, less confusing, just to restore my "Operating System" partition. When I have tried to restore the whole drive, I have been confused by options on which drive to restore (I have two 120GB SSDs [One a scratch drive], plus a hard drive, for personal files) - the recovery process does not identify which SSD is my Operating system drive.

So can someone explain the benefits of backing up these additional partitions - "System Reserved" and the "Recovery partitions"

Regards

Brian Taylor
