ATIH 2016 Trial: Missed backup - no useful logs for troubleshooting

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I stopped using Acronis with version 2011. I am not using a different software. I am looking for backup software to make my backups easy and automated on a new Windows 10 machine. So, I am exploring my alternatives.

I am using the ATIH 2016 Trial and considering purchasing an upgrade.

Setup (">" indicates external storage chain):

  • OS: Windows 10 Pro x64
  • Dell 7352 SE 2-in-1 laptop >
  • > Anker Powered USB 3.0 Hub >
  • > Startech USB 3.0 dual bay 2.5"/3.5" dock (ASMT1053E controller)

ATIH 2016 Trial configuration:

  • All other backup settings left at default values

Issues:

  • Scheduled backups are not performed at scheduled times
  • Missed backups are not performed when system is started
  • None of the logs give any indication as to why backups are not being performed on schedule

I will continue to test ATIH 2016 for one more week. After that, if I cannot produce desireable results, I will make notes and move to my next alternative for testing.

Please let me know if you have questions. Thank you for your time and thoughtful considertion.

The settings in the Scheduler/advanced settings needs changing.

A. The checked option "Run ony when idle" needs to be unchecked.  This is preventing the backup from running.  Your computer is never idle--even if yiou not using it. Reset this option to unchecked.

B. The checked optin"Run only when attached" may need changing.  This opton applies to when the disk being backed up is an external disk.  If you meant this to apply to the external disk containing the tib backup files, then this option should be unchecked.

--------------------------------

I would suggest you change your backup scheme from Incremental/Incremental to Custom/Incremental with automatic cleanup. Backup scheme name must read "custom" available from the same drop down window where you first selected the "Incremental " name.

My GH12 is an example.  Keep your setting of Full plus 5 differntials (Your chain length=6), but enable automtiac cleanup and set the

"Store no more than (n) recent version chains" to a setting where "n" is 1 if you want each new chain to wipe out the proir chains,

or "n' to be 2 or more chains (each chain is 6 files), if you have the storage space for more than 1 chain. Aconis continues to create the replacment full before deleting the oldest chain so there is always the blind need for space enough for an extra full while the replacment is being created)

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup.
...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

-----------------------------------

Based on the above, I would start over by creating a new task with the new settings and cease to use the old task as changing an existing task to new settings rarely works as intended with the corrections rarely working.

---------------------------------

Note, if you have the storage space, consider using the option "do not delete first version of the backup" as often time, it is the oldest backup which is the most help for recovery of missing files.  This would add one more full to your overall storage, but it would be ignored by the automatic deletion  of older chains.

Grover,

I see that you keep what you posted in a "FAQ" thread for Acronis -- thanks for that! Do you work for Acronis? Seems like a lot of work to not get paid for what you do.

I really appreciate the time you took to put all of that together; however, after reading through all of what you provided it has made my decision easy: I will not be using Acronis True Image Home 2016.

Here's why:

If I am going to pay for software, I do not want to have to read volumes of supplemental information to understand all if the non-intuiative nuances in order to create a scheduled backup. That is why I would have paid for the software--so the engineers could figure all of that out for me and make my life as a home user easier

Right now there are two products left on my list of backup software to test. If you can think of any other alternatives for me to try, please feel free to share.

Windows 10 Pro x64 backup solution alternatives:

  • Macrium Reflect (Free or Home)
    • Non-intuative interface; Logging unuseful for troubleshooting backup errors
  • Acronis True Image Home 2016
    • Non-intuative interface; Logging unuseful for troubleshooting missed backups; "Cloud" capabilities feel forced and rushed--I should be able to say "No" to that feature and never see it again
    • Note: if scheduled backups are missed, a log should provide an indication as to why the scheduled backup was missed. Example: idle state not achieved, destination drive not detected, etc.
  • Veeam Endpoint Backup Free
    • testing
  • Windows Backup and Restore (Windows 7)
    • testing

I would encourge  your testing before buying of any of your choices.

No, I am not associated with Acronis nor receive any compensation for my postings. My assistance is as a user attempting to help others in their learning curve.

Each of the backkup softwares have learning curves. TrueImage is one of those with steep learning curves. Bakcup software is much more complex and works best when fresh "out of the box" type environment. Trying to carry settings over from one vesion to another is not practical in this type software.   The more you can keep it like new, the better it functions.

TrueImage seems to work best with MBR type formtting.  Users have reported as being  happy with Macrium Reflect6 paid verson.

Each of us have different needs and each software has its  plus and minuses.

Good luck with your testing.
