Böse Überraschung!

Thread needs solution

Hallo,

ati_01.jpg

Was habe ich falsch gemacht?

reinhardz

In my desktop PC (W7 / 64pro) 2 hard drives are working: a system SSD and a 2 TB HDD; On the first shutdown an incremental backup should be saved on it every day. Thus, when nightly Shutdown always the message indicates that only Acronis is at work. So I feel safe to be protected against data loss.

Yesterday I looked through Windows Explorer times in the backup folder. And what did I have to determine? There were (since July) several daily backup files available, the last however from 20 August ! Huh? I saw the Acronis waiting notice every day ...

Immediately I opened ATI: immediately jumped me a message over clerical errors in the eye (unfortunately forgot in the first shock, to take a screenshot). Lt. CrystalDiskInfo is in the best of luck with both drives.

So I started by clicking on "Backup now" a backup with simultaneous tick setting for "Shut down after backup". When booting today, I looked first in the backup folder: there were two backups! Apparently, the instruction was followed that a backup should be saved at the first shutdown - well. At the same time all previous backups had been deleted - but only the instruction was followed to delete all backups older than 9 days. That was not done before ....

What really bothers me now is the fact that for 10 days there was no message from ATI about the writing problem! If I had not come across it, the problem would continue.

And another shortcoming: on the SSD are files in the circumference of about 550 GB. The full backups to be stored every 7 days were always about 450 GB in size. In this respect, I would have expected that the manually initiated (1.) backup would also have this magnitude. However, it has "only" about 250 GB, while the second is about 200 GB in size:

ati_01.jpg

What did I do wrong? What can I do, that now for the first time a complete backup is written? And above all, how do I go about being notified immediately in the event of a failed backup?

For pertinent hints thanks in advance

reinhardz

I would recommend downloading the MVP Log Viewer tool (from the Community Tools link in my signature) as this can help you review your backup log files to see what messages are being given.

Next, I would recommend that you use the Notifications option for your backup task, so that an email is sent to you with a copy of the Log file contents plus an indication of whether the backup was successful or not.  This would warn you after each daily backup action if anything was wrong.

Your screen image of the backup files shows simply that your latest full backup image has been split into 2 parts as indicated by having the same name but with _v1 & _v2 in the name.  Both of these files are required for a recovery and their total size (205GB + 253GB = 458GB approx.).

See KB 59265: Acronis True Image 2017: wie E-Mail-Benachrichtigungen über Backup-Status einrichten - this applies equally to 2016.

Hello,

Many thanks for the immediate reply.

As to the Log Viewer tool it can be read in the attached PDF file that it applies only to ATI 2017&2018 ...

I will definitely do so!

Thanks again for the explanation.

Reinhardz, the Log Viewer Tool will work will ATI 2016 through 2019 and can handle both the old log format from 2016 & 2017 and the newer format used in 2017 Next Gen, 2018 and 2019. The handling is automatic based on the logs found but can also be switched manually via the menu options offered.

Hello,

Is there a webpage where I can find explanations regarding error messages in the log file?

Many thanks in advance

reinhardz

Sorry, there is no published explanations for any of the log file messages that I am aware of..!

You are welcome to ask here in the forums and we will try to help with explanations where we can.

Okay. So may I post here the log files for the last three days?

But there are - unfortunately - two additional problems. At the end of the files of Sept 1st and Sept 2nd one can read "message=Batch operation has been terminated by user." The same could be seen when opening ATI today.

ati_07.jpg

I never and at no time terminated any operation carried out by acronis!

At last, I am not able to configure the notification option. Although I think I have registered everything correctly, so far every attempt to send a test mail fails.

ati_09a.jpg

So, what are my faults?

Thanks in advance for help

Reinhardz, sorry but the first image (user stopped?) doesn't tell us anything more than just that.

For the second image of your Notifications settings, try using port 587 / TLS (select the bottom TLS option first which will automatically set the correct port), the reason for this is that the version of SSL (port 465) used by ATI is very old and insecure, so rejected by most ISP's now.

See KB 59265: Acronis True Image 2017: how to set up email notifications about backup status which has more information.

Have you tried using the MVP Log Viewer tool yet to look at the log messages?

Reinhardz, sorry but the first image (user stopped?) doesn't tell us anything more than just that.

You are right. I just wanted to point out that there is a problem with ATI because I never ever stopped any operation!

For the second image of your Notifications settings, try using port 587 / TLS (select the bottom TLS option first which will automatically set the correct port), the reason for this is that the version of SSL (port 465) used by ATI is very old and insecure, so rejected by most ISP's now.

Hmm. Those are specifications of my provider. The screenshot on the right is from the according webpage of my provider.

But I have tried port 587 / TLS anyway, yet still without success.

See KB 59265: Acronis True Image 2017: how to set up email notifications about backup status which has more information.

Thanks for the link. I will klick it soon and try to find the right information (I am not a software expert ...).

Have you tried using the MVP Log Viewer tool yet to look at the log messages?

Oh yes. That's why I asked about a source with explanations regarding error messages in the log file; "message=Batch operation has been terminated by user." is, for example, a quote from the last two log files.

Best regards

reinhardz

Reinhardz, thanks for the clarification.  Can you post the contents of one of the logs where it says that you terminated the backup task?

I suspect that the task may have been cancelled due to some other action on your computer rather than you doing something directly.

You may need to check the Windows Event logs for any activities happening at the same time as the task is terminated?

Note: If you want to create an Acronis System Report, this captures both the ATI task logs and the Event logs in a zip file.

I suspect that the task may have been cancelled due to some other action on your computer rather than you doing something directly.

I can't imagine what I am doing allegedly to terminate the operation (id=18)

Backups are to be stored when my PC is started or shut down the first time in a day. Therefore, when I - after midnight - click "Shut down", the Windows shutdown message is displayed on the monitor's screen followed by the message that Acronis is busy: that's all. The next time that I press any PC button is when I switch it on in the course of the new day.

You may need to check the Windows Event logs for any activities happening at the same time as the task is terminated?

I'll try to find the logs - I'm not a computer expert at all <shrug>.

Note: If you want to create an Acronis System Report, this captures both the ATI task logs and the Event logs in a zip file.

Sorry, but for which purpose? I'm not able to do anything with it :-( ...

Thanks again and best regards

reinhardz

Reinhardz, thanks for the log data - this shows that the actual backup task was successful but that an error occurred when the task tried to perform a Validation of the new .tib file.

Operation Samsung SSD 850 PRO 1TB started by schedule.

The following backups have been successfully created:
X:\Mein Backup\Samsung SSD 850 PRO 1TB_inc_b3_s3_v1.tib

Validate Backup Archive
Location: X:\Mein Backup\Samsung SSD 850 PRO 1TB_inc_b3_s3_v1.tib

Pending operation 4 started: 'Validate backup archive'.
The specified file does not exist
The specified file does not exist
The specified file does not exist
Can not perform this operation in quiet mode.

Terminated by user.
Failed to send e-mail notification.
Batch operation has been terminated by user.

I would suggest initially to try to perform a validation for this task as a separate action - there have been some known issues with a combined backup followed immediately by validation.

The 'terminated by user' is a result of the validation failure where a response is needed but can't be requested because this was a scheduled task with no user interaction (quiet mode).

I've tried to find a "Validation now" button, unfortunately without success. How can I start just a validation?

Thank you very much for the explanation - I'm kind of relieved ;-).

ATI 2016 Build 9595 (Abonnement Version)

1. Ich klicke auf "Herunterfahren".

2. Das Herunterfahren beginnt.

3. Es kommt eine Fehlermeldung.

Notification problem solved :-)!

In the meantime I once again played around with the different registration options, also regarding the port number. And, hurray, with a certain configuration, it finally worked! If somebody should have the same problem as me, he should look at the attachment: there you can find the screenshot with my entries.

Bei mir wird beim Herunterfahren " Acronis True Image is terminating the current operations, please wait. The computer will be turned off automatically in about two minutes. Genauso ist es bei mir. Deshalb war ich ja so verwundert, daß es plötzlich

"message=Batch operation has been terminated by user."

hieß.

Hello,

Today, I manually started a validation. To my surprise it stopped after a short time because it couldn't find version 1 of the latest full backup (see log file below, "id = 8" and "id = 9"). After I had been able to show where to find that version ATI resumed the validation. Unfortunately it's missing a certain file: can you interpret the error code?

What actual files are found in your X:\Mein Backup\ folder location for this Samsung SSD 850 PRO 1TB backup task?

Have you manually deleted or moved any files belonging to this task?

If you repeat the validation for this task, do you see the same error messages.  Have you used the Cancel (to ignore) option for each missing file?

Have a look at the attachment, please.

Have you manually deleted or moved any files belonging to this task?

Not at all!

If you repeat the validation for this task, do you see the same error messages.

I'll report about it.

On the other hand, such a message about a non-existing file can be found in the log files of Sept 2nd and 3rd, too. Here's the log file of Sept 2nd:

Have you used the Cancel (to ignore) option for each missing file?

As to the best of my knowledge: no! But I must admit that I don't have a clue where to choose this option ...

Best regards

Thanks for the screen shot of the files showing the files for your b3 version chain which looks to be complete, so it is possible that the missing version 1 file is for an earlier version chain for this same backup, i.e. b2 or b1?

When you perform a manual Validation operation, you should be given a pop-up panel for each missing file with options to Retry, Browse to locate the file, or Cancel or Ignore to ignore the missing file. The Ignore option should be taken when the file does not exist or has been deleted manually.  This action should then modify the Acronis Database to reflect the true status of files for the validated task.

2018-09-05 18_35_27 Validate error panel.png

In the above pop-up message, version 1. referred to my Download_full_b8_s1_v1.tib file which I had manually deleted to trigger the error, but which at that point was the first file of the configured backup files scheme which was set to 'Store no more than 3 recent version chains' and was creating only Full backups each time.  I mention this because 'version 1.' can be misleading without understanding the full context for the backup files.

As I mentioned in my original post I had to realize on Sept 1st that ATI hadn't stored any backup since Aug 20th. Therefore I manually started a backup at the end of that day's "session" expecting to find a full backup in the backup folder the next day. To my surprise there were two backup files, for which you gave the following explanation:

Your screen image of the backup files shows simply that your latest full backup image has been split into 2 parts as indicated by having the same name but with _v1 & _v2 in the name.  Both of these files are required for a recovery and their total size (205GB + 253GB = 458GB approx.).

Therefore, when the above panel popped-up (thank you very much, now I know, where to find the Cancel/Ignore options) I guided ATI by klicking "Browse" to version 1 with which ATI seemed satisfied thereupon resuming the validation.

ati_16.jpg

Shouldn't the red marked file not be the right "version 1"?

Thanks for advices

reinhardz

Reinhardz, as I mentioned in my last post, 'version 1' does not necessarily mean a file with _v1 in the name, rather it means the first available version of a file within the stored version chains available.

My best recommendation is to click on the 'Ignore this version' button when this error is shown, then continue running the validation to see if any more errors are shown?

Please excuse that misunderstanding of mine.

Yesterday I unfortunately couldn't remenber the contents of the panel; today I had to realize that there was no "Ignore" option: I only had the choice between "Repeat", "Cancel" and "Browse".

I'll start the next validation only after ATI has stored a new full backup.

Best regards

reinhardz

There may be some differences in the pop-up panel between versions involved here, my panel was from ATI 2019 which did offer an Ignore button, whereas yours from ATI 2016 doesn't do so.  The Cancel button here should work the same as Ignore if I understand correctly.

Unfortunately, having clicked "Cancel" the validation stopped:

"Validation was stopped by user."

Schaun mer mal, was die Validierung dann ergibt ...

Ciao

All's well that ends well (almost...).

According to schedule, a new full backup was saved tonight; previously I had set a check mark in the options "Validation after backup".

Today I could make out that the full backup was saved to a single file this time. The log was without any error messages! But in spite of this fact I had to find the same message on the start page of ATI as can be seen in my post as of Fri, 09/07/2018 - 15:12: "Validation was stopped by user."

Apparently, the last full backup, which was split into two files (how come?), was the source of all evil.

For all help thanks again
