Cloning from 1TB HDD to 500GB SSD

Thread needs solution

I have just download True Image 2016 for the sole purpose of saving an image of my current HDD to an external drive, then cloning to a SSD, still to be installed.

Could someone give me a run through on how I am supposed to do this.

Do I clone or do an Entire backup?

Thanks for any help.

Craig,

Please see KB document: 56634: Acronis True Image 2016: Cloning Disks which has lots of information on this subject and includes a video showing the process in action.

I would recommend making a full backup of your current 1TB HDD drive to an external drive before attempting to clone the system.

Also please use the Acronis bootable Rescue Media to perform the clone operation as this is the safest method of doing so.

In principle, the clone process should be:

  1. Remove current 1TB HDD and replace this with your new 500GB SSD drive using same connections.
  2. Connect the 1TB HDD as an additional drive via USB or second cable.
  3. Boot from the Acronis Rescue media (on DVD or USB stick) - this must be done in the same mode as your Windows OS boots, i.e. if Windows boots using UEFI, then the rescue media must boot the same.
  4. Run the Clone Wizard and resize any partitions as needed for the difference in size of source and target drives.
Note: Do not resize any hidden system partitions such as System Reserved or UEFI.
  5. Assuming Clone completes successfully, shutdown the computer, remove Acronis media and disconnect second HDD.
  6. Start the system normally with the cloned SSD as the System OS boot device.
