Computer will not start up properly on days of scheduled backup
On days of scheduled backup, my windows 10 PC will not start up properly. Several processes will not start. Also, it will hang if I select to shut down gracefully. I have to power down the computer by holding down the power switch for several seconds. I have found that the problem cures itself if I disconnect the external USB drive I use for the Acronis backups. Other drives do not have an effect. So for some bizarre reason the computer startup fails if the drive I use for Acronis backups is connected at startup. Everything works fine if I disconnect the drive, boot and login to the computer and then reconnect it again!
Has anyone got a fix for this issue, as it's making my use of Acronis a very tedious experience!

I agree with Steve here. Please answer the questions he asks.
If this problem occurrs on startup on days when the backup is not scheduled to run then you might be experiencing an issue with Windows Fast Startup if you are running Win 8 or 10.

Hi Steve and thanks for your interest in this problem. Yes, the PC starts and shuts down without problems on days when there is no scheduled backup and with the disk attached.
I have not configured anything under the advanced options. I have configured a weekly backup where I selected three days in the week for the backup to occur at around 22:00. On the days when a backup is scheduled, if the disk is attached, then the startup takes significantly longer than normal and most of my desktop icons are missing. It looks like something in Acronis aborts the startup process before all the processes can launch. In addition, the computer hangs if I try to perform a normal shutdown.

I would suspect corruption on your USB disk. You should run chkdsk on the drive from an admin command prompt or from within Windows Explorer locate the USB drive, right click on the drive and select Properties, select the Tools tab and select the Check button under Error checking.

If the drive is in use, by Acronis, AV or something else, it may be preventing the computer from shutting down or could be getting scanned at startup as well. . Could you post your Windows system and application logs for review? There may be more information in the Windows logs (not Acronis logs) showing errors that may help pinpoint the cause.
Also, on the days that Acronis is supposedly running and the machine is not behaving, what happens if you shutdown all of the Acronis services in computer management >>> services (there should be 4 of them - stop all of them). Then attempt to shutdown and reboot?

Service name | Purpose |
---|---|
Acronis Nonstop Backup Service (afcdp) | Performs Nonstop Backup for partitions |
Acronis Scheduler2 Service (AcrSch2Svc) | Task scheduling for Acronis True Image |
Acronis Sync Agent Service (syncagentsrv) | Performs Synchronization |
Acronis Managed Machine Service Mini | Communicates with Family Dashboard |
I don't see how startup would be impacted either, but perhaps these services, or Windows VSS is not starting correctly. I would not just stop the services, but set them to disabled and see if the weirdness continues or not. If not, enable them one by one and shutdown and restart to test for the weirdness between each service. If you're not using Non-stop-backups that one can always be disabled. If not using cloud backups, you can permanently disable the Managed machine service mini.
