Different image sizes

Thread needs solution

Using 2016 True Image Home edition. My system drive C: is about 47 GB.  When I back it up to my network drive,, the image created is ~27 GB.  When I back it up to my SSD in my PC (D:) , the image size is 12 GB.  Why would this be?

Welcome to these user forums.

Please download the Log File Viewer app from the link in my signature below and check the logs for the two different backup tasks where you are saving to your network drive and to your internal SSD.  Post copies of the logs to the forum so we can take a look at these for any clues to show why there is a difference in the sizes.

Screen shots of the backup files on the two different drives would also be helpful.

Are you backing up only the C: drive, or are you backing up "the entire PC"?

Screen shots of backup images on network, internal SSD and selecting C drive (to Pat L's comment).

Prashant, thank you for the further information and the screen shots.

Your image of your network drive shows 2 full backup images plus 2 incremental images - from the difference in size from the first full backup to your first incremental backup file, it suggests that a major or significant change took place, perhaps the Windows Anniversary Update?

Your image of your SSD drive only shows 2 incremental backup files which on their own are of no value in recovering your system as they are part of an incomplete version chain, being part of backup 1 sessions 3 & 4 but with no evidence of either the full backup or session 2 incremental files that the later incrementals are based upon.  This explains the difference in size of backup - simply the SSD backup is incomplete.

Thank you Steve.  I think I get it.  I did check and my options were set to incremental (didn't think of that, silly me).

Yes it was a new system build - installed Windows, then backed up to network drive, then installed a lot of updates, applications, etc. and backed up again to the network drive - but like you pointed out, it was incremental.  Then I decided I would keep an image of the drive on my internal SSD as well so if I needed to restore, I could do so quickly and changed the source to the SSD drive.  Would that be a continuining incremental to the first back up to the network drive and explain why they are only sessions 3 & 4 on the SSD?

My plan is to set up my NAS to sync with my computer so I have quicker access to my files on my computer (for photo/video editing) than over the network.  Would backing up to my local drive and sync it to the NAS as a backup be a good approach?

Thanks again for the help.

Prashant, in all honesty you will need to have a separate / different backup task for each different target drive you will be using - ATIH is not designed to keep track of backups that are stored in multiple different target locations.

I personally do a mix of backups myself, with a full backup to my own NAS and a separate backup to a local drive / partition.  I am not sure that there is a great difference between the time it would take to write the backup directly to the NAS versus copying the backup from the local drive to the NAS - the key difference is that with the latter (copy method) you are transferring a very large file across your network as a single unit (assuming you are not doing any file split), whereas with the ATIH task, this is writing data to create the target backup file on the NAS and will have some error handling built into the process.

I like to keep a local backup, especially with my laptop, as this gives me a means of doing a quick recovery even if I am away from my home network.
