File by file backup error - "Failed to recover file or folder 'filename' Retry, Ignore, Cancel"
Recover Bankup Archive (1 of 1)
I am getting this Error Message over and over again. They look like *.top files, so why are they in the archive?

Yet another typo.... .top should read .tmp. The files listed are, I presume TMP files. There are only 3 examples but hundereds of files requiring a keystroke to proceed. I used the mouse the first time but the dialoge box jumps around and I eventually clicked "CANCEL" by mistake. The second pass i used the keyboard and in the end i just held done <ALT> <I> to answer the question continuously.
Steve Smith.
Thanks for the reply. I'm using Acronis True Image 2016, file folder backup was the only backup i could launch, normally I would use the disk partition backup.
This is a safety backup of a system that is going in for warranty repair to Toshiba. The system does not start or power-up. It is a laptop and despite assurances from Toshiba, I've been down this road before, I removed the hard drive and slaved it to another machine and backed it up onto a SSD in an external chassis. Also done this before, well maybe not this exact configuration but lots of backups. As I predicted, Toshiba sent back the original computer which now works with a freshly loaded hard drive with it's original, right out of the box, installation on it. Ya!
Attached the backup drive to the laptop and started the file/folder restore. I thought it would take hours and so I left. Upon returning, hours later, I found this situation as described above. File by file backup error - "Failed to recover file or folder 'filename' Retry, Ignore, Cancel" Again, my guess is that they are TMP files that cannot be restored.
How anoying.
Chapter II
The restore is done, I answered the million questions, no I didn't count, why would I? The system has rebooted and I am getting an Error on startup and repairs are not working. REboot and STOP code 0xc00002e3
Repairs are not successful.

Albert, when restoring your files & folders from your backup image, what types of files & folders were you actually restoring. From your chapter II update, it sounds like you have been restoring files & folders belonging to system folders instead of only doing this for pure user data. You only use a full disk & partitions backup to restore this type of data because of the dependencies it has with lots of other areas of the system and registry.
It may be a little late to ask, but did you make a backup of the returned factory reset laptop before you starting doing this restore?
If not, then I would suggest you need to check your Toshiba documentation and find out how to do another factory restore / reset and get back to where you started again.
When restoring files & folders, I would recommend restoring these to new locations and never replace any data in the AppData folders etc unless you are 100% certain that it will not break anything in doing so.

The STOP code 0xc00002e3 error could be the result of a corrupted BCD file which probably can be fixed or it might be an SAM error indicating that the Windows Security Accounts Manager is failing to start which in turn could be a Windows Registry corruption indication. In this case your chances of fiixing the problem are minimal.

Well...... The BCD news is bad. 0 installations of Windows. No repairs, no rebuilds generate any results.
Chapter II
I figured something bad has happened and since this machine is a fresh reload from Toshiba and I still have the backup, I'll start over......
Well start over takes on a new meaning when you erase the hard drive with the Toshiba / Windows utility, it erases everything. Now all I get is "no boot device available" and I'm screwed..... BEWARE all of you out there. Apparently Erase means render your system inoperable. No recovery Partition, NOTHING!
Chapter III
Just ordered the Recovery media from Toshiba and despite my attempts to get them to send it to me for free..... I had to pay $39+ for the priviledge of restoring my system to it's previous condition. Naked, just the way it shipped from Toshiba when it was new. Remeber.... they promised that they would leave the hard drive alone. Next time go buy another hard drive and send that one with the computer. Let's see if I ordered another hard drive, I could have swapped the drive instead of all the Backup stuff and just checked the old drive and sent the dead laptop back to Toshiba.
One note: I was unable to to perform a disk/partition backup of the old drive and I don't understand why. The system was dead so I removed the drive. I used another laptop with an external drive connector to conect the bare drive from the original laptop to a USB port and then I had an SSD drive in an external enclosure that I atteched to another USB port. I booted the laptop from an Acronis USB boot drive, which worked great. Acronis is running without Windows and the the drives all show up in the list, but no Disk/Partition Backup available, only the File and Folders was available.

Albert, sorry to hear your continued problems with this Toshiba laptop and drive.
Difficult to say why you are not seeing any Disk & Partition backup option for the removed drive when attached to another computer and booting from the Acronis USB Rescue Media. We would need some screen shots showing the drives etc, but cannot see how you can do a Files & Folders backup if there are no partitions?
