File system too large for 32 bit version

Thread needs solution

Hi,  I am trying to backup a storage spaces partition that is configured for 50T (the actual space is much smaller) and is running REFS.  True Image 2016 is failing with the error:  File System is too large for 32-bit version.

How do I fix this?  Is there a 64 bit version of True Image?

FWIW -- This operation worked fine with the partition was NTFS.

Hi Doug,

1) What is your OS and please also list if it is 32 or 64 bit?

2) Can you post the exact error and what you're doing exactly when the error occurs?

3) REFS is technically a file system designed for Server 2012.  Acronis True Image home is not designed to run on Server Systems - see the KB for supported Operating Systems

4) I don't see REFS as a supported file system either though...

Supported file systems

  • NTFS
  • FAT32
  • Ext2/Ext3/Ext4 *
  • ReiserFS *
  • Linux SWAP *

* The Ext2/Ext3/Ext4, ReiserFS, and Linux SWAP file systems are supported only for disk or partition backup/recovery operations

Thanks.  I am running on Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit.  The exact error is "File System is too large for 32-bit version".  I've also attached a screenshot of the error.

I think you're probably right, that REFS is not supported with Acronis.  It may be for servers, but it is now part of Win 10.  I switched to it because it is supposed to be more resilient to failures, which is mildly amusing that then it can't be backed up.  :)

Doug, you are the second person I have encountered who has hit problems trying to backup REFS file system data, the prior one was using Server 2012.  Unfortunately the current Acronis versions do not support REFS.

I would suggest submitting Feedback to Acronis that this is now an option with Windows 10 so that it can be considered for inclusion in a future versions of the product, hopefully 2017 if they haven't already finalised the scope for file systems to be supported.  The Feedback Tool can be found in the Help section of the Acronis GUI.
