Files Backup after being Away

Thread needs solution

I have it set up for selected files backup at 10AM daily. I was not around at 10AM for 4 days last week. So now, it is backing up, but after 2 1/2 hours it is only 32% done. It usually takes less than 10 minutes.

I am afraid to cancel the backup, as then the next one will be looking for it, and I will have a lot of problems. What should I do and why does it say its going to take another 5 hours when the usual backup is 10 minutes? Thank you.

HnLA, sorry but impossible to tell you why the backup should be taking so long, too little information to work with.

If you have the MVP Log Viewer, look at the backup task log to see if there are any messages shown there that might give a reason for the slow progress.  Link for the viewer in my signature if you need to download it.

Where are you backing up to?  Is this a local / network or cloud destination?

I am doing the same backup that has been working for months now. C drive files to F/AcronisFiles/FilesBackup drive.

It is now up to only 36% and still says 5 hours left. It says it is validating.

I understand that your backup has been working for some time, but what is your F: drive where you are backing up to?  How is this connected?  What does the log file show for messages about the backup task?

I stopped the first one, b7s8, and ran it again.

b7s8 took 17 minutes, but got stuck on validating. 95MB

b7s7 was done on 5/1 took 19 minutes 174MB

b7s9 took about 10 minutes 325MB, but it is still validating. There must be something going on with that? It is showing 0% complete, even though all the files seem to have been backed up.

It is really simple, I have an external drive connect by USB.

I am not sure how to use or access the Log Viewer.  IT seems to get stuck now on the Validating. I am pretty sure the files are copied, its just not getting the validation process done. Thank you.

The MVP Log Viewer is very simple to use, download the zip file, extract the log viewer program from this and run it.  It doesn't need to be installed and will default to showing you the latest task log file contents.  The log file will show that the backup was successful prior to continuing to the validation step.

There have been previous problems with users who include validation as a final step in creating backups and this is an optional step that is not always needed.  I personally do not select to do a validation when creating a backup - I can very easily run a separate validation on demand or else can explore the backup files via Explorer or by mounting the image to a drive letter - any of which can help show that the backup is good.

Thanks, I unchecked the validation box under Options.  My BU programs have always done this with no problem, Acronis and Retrospect before that.  Yes, it says the backup has been successful. Still not sure why suddenly it has a problem with validation.  I did nothing to the program.

It may be worth running a CHKDSK for your backup drive to check that all is OK there but other than that I have no explanation for why validation should now be running so slowly.

It may be also worth trying a manual validation for you backup task and see if that runs quickly or not?
