how does this thing work?

Thread needs solution

I just bought Acronis True Image 2016 with unversal restore and can't seem to figure out how to create a universal image.  I see tons of posts about how to do a restore which appears to be a no brainer. Where can i find directions on how to create a universal image using this software.

Here is what I've done so far.

- loaded a computer with Windows 7 and it's updates as a base image.

- downloaded and installed Universal Restore boot creator

- created a universal restore boot disc

- booted using the universal restore disc but there doesn't appear to be a place to select your restore image or create a new image.

Thanks

You don't create a universal image.

If you want to restore the image of computer A onto computer B:

- create a full backup of computer A (regular backup, can be created from ATI running in Windows)

- create the recovery/rescue medium for the regular recovery phase, then another one for the Universal Restore phase (both can be downloaded as ISO from Acronis.com. Only the first one can be created with ATI running in Windows, alternatively).

- gather the drivers of computer B. If the same OS is on B as on A, just copy the driver folders from the Windows folders. Otherwise, download the drivers of Computer B for the OS of Computer A from the manufacturer (disk controllers, chipset). Drivers need to be in their .sys, .inf format.

- boot computer on the rescue medium, restore the image on computer B

- boot computer on the universal restore medium, perform the universal restore.

OK, so to make sure I have this right.

1. Install ATI on the base image machine and create a full backup

2. Create a regular recovery boot disk AND a Universal Restore Disk

3. Put Drivers on thumbdrive or network share

4. Boot up the new computer (B) with the recovery media

5. Shutdown new computer (B)

6. Reboot computer (B) with universal boot disk

BEFORE, you go to all the trouble of creating a full backup do yourself a favor and make sure that you can successfully create a recovery disk that can both see the disks you want to recover to, and from. Without the ability to do that the backup does you no good.

TDG,

Question, are you wanting to restore a backup file from one machine to another machine or a backup made from a machine that you have replaced the motherboard in so you need to restore a backup file to the machine with the new board?

I don't think you are given your posts here.  The above scenarios mentioned would be the only reason for you to use Universal Restore.  If that is the reason however than you have the steps correct.  I would add to step number 4 - Recover backup file, and to step number 6 - add drivers for computer B
