Not available in the trial version.

Thread needs solution

Hi everyone.

I recently decided to clone my C: Drive to an SSD so I could then upgrade it to Windows 10. This would have allowed me to just put the original drive back in if I was not happy with Windows 10.

I booted the PC from a True image boot CD with the SSD in a usb cradle. I started the clone process and received a message stating that the Cloning feature is not available in the Trial version.

I have been paying for various versioons of Acronis True image for a number of years and was gutted when this message came up.

It looks like I will now be too late to take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10, but would really like to know why this would have happened.

Best to all,

~Mike~

Mike,

If you have only a Trial version of ATIH 2016 then there are a number of limitations that this imposes.

Please see KB document: 2768: Trial Version Limitations of Acronis Products which details these limitations.

If you have a full version of ATIH 2016 that you have registered and activated, then you can make a new copy of the Acronis Rescue Media on CD/DVD or USB stick and use this to do the clone.

Please also see KB document: 56634: Acronis True Image 2016: Cloning Disks for the correct process for doing cloning - this includes a video tutorial.

You could also try doing the clone using Rescue Media from an older version of ATIH if you have this, but please ensure that the media is booted using the same method as your Windows OS uses - i.e. UEFI boot or Legacy (BIOS) boot.

I have the exact same problem. Have paid Acronis lots of money over the years and when I really need it (to Clone a disk) I am told that I only have a trial version! So why did Acronis take £11 on Feb 12 and another £50 on Feb 20 from my credit card (a five-PC installation) What am I paying for?

Like Mike, I was very upset to discover that what I have been paying for each year since 2009 is not as advertised. I have not needed to clone a disk before but with this type of product, you want it to be there when you really need it. Why do Acronis issue serial numbers that do not activate all the features? Why do they not put in a disclaimer that says "Some of the things we told you that you have will not work unless you give us more money?

I do not need information about how to clone the system drive - I had already read KB document 56634 (several times) before I even clicked on the 'Clone Disk' icon. Information about the limitations of Trial Versions or workarounds involving USB sticks is not any use when you have paid for a full version. You just want it to work - and it doesn't.

Another comment, when I could not get the full, paid-for version of True Image 2017 to work, I downloaded the application from Kingston.com and entered the Acronis True Image HD software Activation Key supplied with the SSD drive I was hoping to clone to. You can guess what happened...

"TRIAL VERSION DOES NOT SUPPORT DISK CLONING"

Has anyone actually got this application to do what it says it does?

Robert, welcome to these user forums.

If you have entered a serial number for a full Acronis product but are seeing warnings about Trial version limitations, then I can only advise that you open a Support Case directly with Acronis to resolve this, as we cannot help with licensing / activation issues as we are just users ourselves here.

What I would suggest is to look at your Acronis Account online and check what that shows for your license status - you should see this as either Perpetual (buy once, use forever) or Subscription (buy once, renew each year or two years).  Both of these license types provide full functionality while they are active.

If you have a Subscription license and have allowed this to lapse, then this reverts to being limited to be used only for Restoring / Recovering backups made previously while the license was active.

Hi Steve and thanks for taking the time to reply to my rant. I understand that this is a user forum but I was just picking up on Mike's thread.

"Perpetual" and "Subscription" do not seem to mean very much in reality, since the "perpetual" versions cease to provide the functionality needed to stay up to date. Yes, you can "use forever" as long as none of the hardware changes (or so it seems). I now have seven "perpetual" licences - dating from True Image 10 and 11, True Image 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017 - for five PCs. Plus five subscription licences, valid until Feb 2018. In none of these does the Clone Disk tool work, so perhaps you can understand my frustration.

Robert, if you have ATIH 2017 in either the perpetual or subscription versions, then Clone Disk should work fine for you and if not, then you should open a Support Case for this issue with Acronis.  This is working for other users including myself, so there is an issue here if it isn't doing so for you.

Acronis have just released build 8029 for ATIH 2017 perpetual / standard versions today to pick up on the latest updates and fixes.

Cloning should only ever be performed using the Rescue Media, and you should create this from within the GUI using the Rescue Media Builder tool.

Just to confirm, you have activated your installed version of ATIH 2017?  This is shown on the Account page in the GUI.

Acronis redeemed themselves almost completely! Once they had seen the full system report, they realsied that a 'rogue' OEM Acronis installation was affecting the Clone Disk application. Solution? Uninstall everything relating to Acronis and re-install version 2017.

They also accepted that I had been misled by the way Clone Disk defaulted to the 'purchase' screen and refunded the payment I had made for an Update I didn't need. Then a follow-up phone call to make sure I was happy.

Almost completely? Well, I still have to complete the task I started on Feb 12, ten days ago, and actually clone the disk in question!

Watch this space... maybe

Robert, thanks for posting your update on this issue.  Great to hear that Acronis have redeemed themselves with your situation.

With regards to doing the Clone Disk, please see post: 128231: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this!!! for some guidance in this area.
