[Resolved] Can't restore using rescue disc

Thread needs solution

Hi there,

I am running into an issue when trying to restore a backup using the rescue disc with Acronis True Image 2016

I am currently using the latest version of the software, as well as the most up to date rescue disc.

When trying to run "Disk Recovery" I am running into the attached message, Same happens when selecting "Browse for a backup"

Oddly enough when trying to run a Backup, it seems to work fine.

Just doesn't work when trying a restore

Seems to work OK on another computer, I have also re-created the disc multiple times to no avail.

Is your OS installed as UEFI/GPT or MBR/Legacy?

Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS

Once you've confirmed, you want to make sure to boot your Acronis bootable media in the same manner as your OS was installed.  To be sure, use your one time boot menu key after reboot (F12 for Dell, ESC, F1 or some other key for others - check your bios manual if you're not sure).  You should then see an option for legacy and UEFI and need to pick the correct one.  If you have a UEFI bios, you may need to turn on CSM/Legacy mode to see legacy disks and/or disable secure boot to see other UEFI discs.

When backing up, it really doesn't matter if you boot recovery media as Legacy or UEFI.  However, when restoring, it does.  The same applies when installing Windows OS - how you boot to the media will deterime whether or not it installs as Legacy or UEFI.

My OS is installed as UEFI

So far I have tried booting the rescue media in UEFI Mode as well as in Legacy Mode (both 32 and 64-bit Options have been tested on Legacy mode) and either way it throws up the same error.

I would recommend creating the alternative Windows PE Rescue media and trying that instead of the standard Linux based bootable media, which I suspect you have been using so far.

The WinPE Rescue Media has the advantage that you will be booting into a mini Windows environment which should behave much as your normal operating system boot does.

The process of building the WinPE media is straight-forward to follow, if you are missing any required components, i.e. the media addon and Windows ADK, there are links provided, just click on these and install the missing item, then continue with the build.  All is done from within the Acronis Rescue Builder tool - you just need to choose which type of media to build it on, i.e. DVD or USB memory stick.

The messages you see are related to memory access issues, and this could be either an obscure software bug, or a memory hardware problem with a memory DIMM.

Hey guys,

After installing Windows AIK and True Image addins for the WinPE bootdisc, I have been able to successfully use the 'Recovery' Function now without any issues

I will also note I have tried different memory in my system and that did still result in the same error on the normal Linux Bootmedia

Many thanks to everyone for their help.
