Restore; Os Not Bootable

Thread needs solution

I backed up my operating system in True Image 2016. I checked all boxes for the disk. It created a .tib file. I booted to the recovery cd. I selected the backup.tib and the destination hard drive. It completed, however, it doesn't boot to my OS. Instead I am given a black screen with white writing saying 'installation media missing' bcd/boot.

I tried Automatic Repair. It didn't work. I check the disk and all the NTFS files are there.

I cannot boot into my OS.

Does anyone know how?

In Acronis, there is whole disk imaging and partition imaging.  If you are in Partition Mode, you may not have actually selected all of them - I alway suggest selecting the entire disk if you are actually imaging the entire disk (say to copy a spinning drive to a new SSD).  Going that route, I've never had a problem.

1) Do you still have the original drive to install and verify that it is still booting correctly?  If so, I'd reccommend going back and making double sure that you are taking a whole disk backup.

2) Did you take your image while the pc was booted into Windows through the Acronis GUI, or from offline Acronis bootable recovery media?  When doing a whole disk image, I usually boot offline to the recovery media and take an image of the system that way - it has never let me down.  When booted into Windows, it's relying on Volume Shadow copies (VSS), which leaves room for the possiblity of errors.

3) If you don't have the original drive to test and verify again that you've taken a whole disk image, you can try to do a BCD repair from the newly pushed image that i failing to boot while using your Windows installation startup repair media.  This is from a Windows 8.1 forum, but should work for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and/or 10 (just use the right repair media for your OS).

a. Insert the Windows 8 installation media and boot the computer using the disc.

Note: You need to check the computer manual on how to set CD/DVD drive as the first boot device in the BIOS.

b. Once you boot using the Windows installation disc, on the Windows 8 installation window, click on Repair your computer.

c. Click on Troubleshoot and in the Advanced options
d. Select Command Prompt. Type the following commands into the prompt and press Enter key after each command.

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Once the command completes, restart the computer.

The cmd lines didn't fix it. I am going to take a new image. I always take the image from the bootable disk. Whenever I backup I select all the check boxes for the disk with the OS. Then I restore the tib to a new drive.

What am I doing wrong?

I just don't understand why it is so complicated and doesn't work.

I boot to the cd. I select all check marks on the disk. It creates a .tib.

To restore I boot to the disc and restore to the target with the .tib.

But when I go to boot from the new disc it will not boot into the OS.

I had this problem with 2010, so boought 2016 today and have the same issue.

James,

There are 2 modes for the backup..."Partition Mode" and "Disk Mode".  You should be using "Disk Mode" not "Partition Mode".  In "Disk Mode" there should only be one check mark for the entire disk.  In "Partition Mode" there are multiple check marks.  Therefore, I belive you are using Partition Mode.

Also, there 2 modes for recovery...Partition Mode and Disk Mode.  You should use Disk Mode.

Unfortunately, I am using 2014 and cannot provide screen grabs.  I have reviewed the 2016 User Manual and it is not very good.

I am going to look at some of the other threads and see if I can find you some pictures to look at.

Don't give up...we can get this to work.

James,

Here's a link that describes how to migrate to SSD.  However, the same procedure will work migrating from HDD to HDD.

Please go to this link and download the documentation pdf file:  http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/

Once downloaded please go to section 5.1.1.4 Recovering your system to a new disk under bootable media.

Review this section in detail.  Note that you should not recover MBR and Track 0.

The MBR and Track 0 will only need to be recovered if your PC contains a Hidden Manufacturer Recovery partition.  Do not confuse this with Windows Recovery Partition, they are not the same.  If this applies to you, you may also need to recover the Disk Signature.  See page 74 of the documentation for details on Disk Signature.

THANK YOU EVERYONE.

I restored without selecting the MBR track 0 and it booted to my OS. Perfect.

~FTrPilot...thanks for taking the time to thoroughly go through that information.

~Enchanted...I did read that documentation when I got the software, but I thought that since it was a new disk that I would need to check MBR/0.

So to recap for ppl who came along with a similar issue...

I create a backup to xxx.tib. I used the bootable media from 2016. When I then selected my file.tib to restore I was give 3 check boxes. (NTFS, System Partition, MTB Track0). I had kept selecting all 3. This would make the drive unbootable. I then used the DriveCleanUp utility to clean the disk I was restoring to. I selected only (System Partition, NTFS) I then followed the prompts. You get different prompts if you don't use MBR. So I selected my new disk on both selection screens and it worked.

~Finished.

So I selected my new disk on both selection screens and it worked.

~Finished..............

Congrats!   And, thanks for the feedback.
