Run ATI from an External HDD

Thread needs solution

Before I go diving into this myself I wanted to post up my idea and see if anyone has done something similar.

I have a 500 gig external SATA hdd, in a USB 3.0 external case. My thought is to create a partition, that includes ATI 2016, so when I plug in the hdd to a USB port it will automagically run ATI 2016 with some pre-built parameters, in my case just a full backup on my PC.

Has this been done? Is it even doable?

Steve,

ATI 2016 is not a "Stand Alone" type program.  It installs within the Windows architecture, putting the program files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis folder & subfolders.  It also loads program information into the Windows Registry, and creates background services and programs.  Personally, I see no way to install ATI on an external drive.

ATI does have the ability to run backups to external drives and to set a backup parameter to only run when the drive is connected.  When creating a backup...on the Schedule Tab, Select Advanced Settings...Then check Run when the current destination device is attached. See picture below.

Thats too bad...what I was hoping to do was create a partition, where ATI could be the bootable app, much like when you make a bootable flash drive. The second partition would have my backup.

It's possible...with a work-a-round, but it will never be a stand-a-lone option that runs directly in Windows.  However, you can create a drive that has Acronis available for bootable recovery where you can boot directly to Acronis from the same drive, and have that paritions sepearate from your data.  I do this so that i have one USB hard drive that has Acronis bootable recovery media and can also be used to store my Acronis created backup images.

If you have critical data on the USB drive, I'd recommend backing it up or moving it off (just in case), before proceeding.

1) Create your acronis bootable recovery media on a USB flash drive, first.  take an Acronis disk image of the USB flash drive and save it for later

2) Partition your external USB hard drive (not flash drive) - creating a 2GB parition at the front of the disk and a second partition for the rest of your data.  If you do this in Windows, you'll have to format the drive first, which will wipe all data on the drive.  However, a 3rd part tool like minitool parition wizard free, can parition a drive on the fly without any data loss - still a good idea to have a backup first though!!!

3) Once paritioned, restore your USB flash drive image to the first partition, using the PARTITION restore option.  This will make it bootable, and set the first partition as FAT32 and write all of the recovery information from Acronis on that parition.

You know have a single USB hard drive that has an Acronis bootable recovery media that can be booted offline.

Bingo...this worked perfectly! Thanks Bobbo_3C0X1.
