TI 2016 backs up without being asked to!

Thread needs solution

I've been using TI for some years now, and TI 2016 since it came out.

I'm using TI 2016 on Win 10 equipped PCs.

I have noticed recently that, after restoring a full backup and restarting the PC, after about five minutes, TI 2016 starts to backup to the file that has just been restored, overwriting it. I do not use any scheduling at all, and cannot understand this behavior, or find any way to disable it.

If anyone else has experienced this, and can let me know how to stop this automatic backing up, I would appreciate it.

I have the same issue, and use Windows Task Manager to disable all Acronis processes.  That works until the next PC hard boot, when something in Acronis software reinstalls their programs.  Most annoying, and not a property of previous versions.

Scuda,

Several users have reported the same problem. YOu might want to notiy Acronis of this issue via the feedback option

to be sure your problem is on the fixit list.

Albert,

Confirm your problem is the same.  YOu first did a restore, and after the restore, a new backup automatically began.

No, this does not happen after a RESTORE, which I have never done.  I missed part of the original comment by Scuda.  What I do have with Acronis 2016 on Windows 10 is that the software keeps trying to make backups, even though all of my backups are marked "Do Not Schedule"

For GH-Storage

Thanks for your comment. Interesting that I am not the only one.

I have, as you suggested, described the problem in a feedback.

Hello Scuda,

I would recommend to delete all tasks using Acronis Scheduler manager and the command task zap. Then stop all Acroservices and rename:

C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts
C:\ProgramData\Acronis\Home\Database
C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

start services and re-add backups.

Thank you,

Hi Ekaterina Surkova,

Just got around to using your suggestion (been on holiday).

If I notice the problem again, I will post on this thread.

Thanks for taking the time to investigate.

For information, I have also encountered this or a very similar problem to the OP, i.e. I did a restore of my Windows 10 partition to recover from a problem which had lost all my sound output - the restore went fine and sound was restored but then Acronis immediately started a backup which overwrote the backup image that I had restored from.

My understanding of why this happened is quite simple - in my backup task I had ticked the option to perform any missed tasks on next startup (in the Advanced options on the Schedule page).  In restoring the system, including restoring all the Acronis folders with Database and Scripts, thus ATIH thought that I had missed a scheduled backup and got straight to the action of rectifying this and performing the backup (after delay if set) at system startup.

Steve's post seems to make total sense.  As for the OP's original post, I cannot figure out why the backup job would completely overwrite the existing backup files that were just used for recovery, unless the job cleanup schedule would dictate that it would need to do so.  Otherwise, if it were scheduled to just run an additional incremental, differential, or new full backup, it shouldn't be overwriting any of the existing backup.  My guess here would be that the next backup in the chain is configured to require the backup to create a new full and then remove the existing one... which in this case, if there is only one backup, would delete it after the next full is completed.  I would check to see what the backup scheme, backup method and automatic cleanup rules are set to. In this case, making some modifications might prevent this from occurring again.

Scuda/Albert,

Check out the attached screenshot of how I have a weekly backup configured.  It does 1 full to start, followed 6 incrementals (one each day which equates to a week if you don't run any between or miss any days either).

I am retaining 4 version chains (version chain = 1 full + 6 incrementals), which is essentially 4 weeks or approximately a month.  When the 5th version chain starts and the full backup of it completes, then it will automatically groom out the oldest chain (leaving 3 full incremental chains, but also the recent full backup that was just taken).  It's a simple daily, weekly, monthly scheme that gives about a month worth of recoveries and keeps the backup from growing too large.

If you're retention / cleanup is too strict, adopting a backup like this should alleviate the symptoms of the original post (I'm guessing though as I don't actually know how things are currentl configured  for either of you - I'd be curious to see).

Hi Bobbo,

Like you, I cannot understand why any backup file should be overwritten, under any circumstances. It made me very wary about using Acronis after noticing this problem. You should not have to protect backup files from being destroyed by their creator!

To reiterate, I do not use any scheduling at all, preferring to manually backup system and data partitions. This problem came out of the blue, and I seem to have it under control by uninstalling and re-installing TIH. I have also followed Ekaterina Surkova's advice, just in case.

For now, all is OK.

Scuda

Have the same problem on Win 8.1 system. System does an unexpected backup and sometimes overwrites an existing backup.

I do full manual backups, none scheduled. I use the date in the name of my backups, and found I have overwritten older backups. I password

protect my backups with a different password everytime. I found older backups with a more current date. Looking at a January backup, I found

the modified date in February. Looking at the files in the backup, I found some with a February date. At times, my manually started backup is QUEUED

up as something else is running. Only Acronis Scheduler2 Service is running at startup, others disabled.

I also had problems removing an USB drive, without running Acronis, and couldn't remove it as another process was using it. Task Scheduler, showed

Acronis was using 99-100% DISK Usage. What's it doing??? And why??? I have been running Acronis since 2010. I have never seen this behavior before.

I have filled out a Feedback to Support. Not going to Windows 10 until I have a valid system backup. I have not tried a RESTORE yet. Waiting for a new 2.5 inch drive to do the Restore first. Unsure of my backups.

Ed,

Please start a new thread for your issue.  Response from others will be much better if you do that.

Thank you.
