Unable to add file/folder exclusions to backup options

Thread needs solution

When creating a backup, I go to the Exclusions tab in the file backup options, tick the checkbox labelled "Files matching the following criteria" and click the + (plus) button to add a folder to be excluded from the backup.  But the folder name I've entered does not appear of the list of excluded files/folders.

Apparently, I should be able to press a button on the right-hand side of the data entry field that appears after pressing the + button, but no such button exists and so I'm unable to choose the files/folders to exclude using a file/directory browser dialog that should appear.

Does anyone else has this issue?  Is this a bug with ATI 2016?

Here is a GIF animation of ATI 2016 when I try to add a backup exclusion:

Strange, you should see at the right of the location box that appears after you click the + sign a smaller box with 3 dots which when clicked will open another window which displays a directory tree from which you can select files/folders.  Alternatively you can manually enter the path to the file/folder you wish to exclude in the location box and when finished hit enter or click outside the box and the chosen file/folder will appear in the Exclusion list.

Yes, but I don't see that smaller box with three dots, no matter whether the ATI 2016 app window is maximised or not.

I tried that first but it doesn't work.

:(

Well it sounds like your installation of the application has gone corrupt or the installation did not work correctly during the installation process.  You can attempt a Repair of the installation to see if that might fix things.  If you are using Windows 10 then open Programs and Features, locate the Acronis True Image entry in the list and select it.  Choose Uninstall and you will get a popup window from which you can choose the Repair option.  If that fails then I recommend you unistall the application and run the cleanup tool following thre directions in the link provided below.  After you have done that thern reinstall the app again and when you do that make sure you disable any anti-virus apps on your computer.

I did a Repair but same issue remains, did an uninstall but still no joy.

Deleting an item from the exclusions list works just fine, though not much use to me.

I guess it's issues like these that are the root of people's complaints about recent versions of ATI - I might just uninstall again and install ATI 2015 on my Win10 machine

Sorry to hear that.  Are you beyond your 30 day support limit?  If not I would contact support.

You might also consider submitting feedback describing your issue.  You can use the in app feedback option found in the Help section (open book icon) or at this link:

I even tried installing ATI 2016 (build 6207 - the latest as downloaded from Acronis website) on a fresh new virtual machine and I get the same problem.  Even installing on Windows 10 running on a MacBook.  It's too much of a coincidence to suggest that it's an issue with the Windows config on different PCs, which is what makes me think that it's a bug with ATI 2016, but then others have said that the file/folder exclude in ATI2016 works fine for them.

Can anyone who can successfully add file/folder exclusions in ATI 2016 please check again and also let me know which build of ATI 2016 you're running.

Thanks in advamce.

John,

I am using the latest build TI 6027 which I believe you are as well and your issue does not exist on my installation.

Question, does your issue occur while you are creating a new backup task or are you attempting to modify an existing task?  If you are trying to modify an existing task this might be the problem as modification of an existing task often produces unexpected results.  Try creating a new task and see if the issue still presists.

I do read that you installed to a VM so the above might not be the issue.  Some anti-virus apps block functionality of the TI app.  I would also suggest that you add TrueImage.exe to the exclude list in your anti-virus app as well as other TI processes to eliminate that as a possibility.

@Enchantech: thanks for all your help so far.

The issue occurs when creating a new backup, but interestingly, I am able to add exclusions to an existing backup that I'm modifying, which I'm sure was created with an earlier version of ATI.  I'll try adding TrueImage.exe to the AV whitelist for Kaspersky but I'm not convinced the AV is an issue because I disabled it on bootup which made no difference to ATI.

I'm still puzzled as to why a fresh install of ATI 2016 on Windows Bootcamp on my MacBook exhibits the same issue as on my PC.

Try adding mms.exe to the whitelist.

Look here as well:

Did you mean mms_mini.exe? I can't find an mms.exe on my system but mms_mini.exe is already on my AV's whitelist

Yes I do, sorry for the typo.

Hi there.  I am using ATIH 2016 v6027 as well on a Windows 7 x64 Enterprise build.  It originally had ATIH 2015 and I upgraded without issue and this feature is working for me.  Actually, i recently tried out Acronis 11.5 so had to completely remove ATIH 2016 first and then went back to ATI 2016 as a fresh install and is still working for me.  I click on the plus sign and am able to manually type in the exclusion or click the 3 dots on the right and navigate to a file and older and it saves the exclusion.

I have a Windows 10 VM at home with ATIH2016 as well and will it test it on that to make sure it's working there as well though, but it does seem to be working 2016 v6027 (at least for some, or perhaps most).

When you removed ATIH from your system, did you run the 2015 cleanup tool as well?  I've found that to start "fresh", once you've uninstalled from control panel, then run the cleanup tool and reboot.  Before installing again, check to see if any directories are left over in

C:\program files (x86)

C:\program files

C:\program files (x86)/common

C:\program files (x86)/common

C:\programdata (hidden folder)

If there are any Acronis folders there after removing and running the clean tool, manually delete them and reboot one more time and then reinstall cleanly and see if the problem still persists.  I know it's not ideal as you'll have to recreate your backup scripts again, but this will help ensure there are no leftover issues from previous installs.

Thanks for your help.  I've uninstalled both ATI 2016 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 using Revo UnInstaller Pro.  I then run the Acronis cleanup utility and then rebooted, checked for any stray Acronis files, found none.  I've reinstalled ATI2016 and found some backups (created with an older version of ATI) were still displayed in the list of backups - where is that information stored?

Anyway, without any AV program installed I tried creating a new backup and specifying the file/folder exclusions, it still doesn't work! WTF is going on??!!

As I mentioned before, backups that I've created using earlier versions of ATI are still listed in ATI 2016 after a fresh install so I'm not sure why, given that I uninstalled ATI completely and ran the cleanup tool.

Can you guys confirm that you're able to specify the backup exclusions for a brand new backup in ATI 2016?

The only workarounds I can think of:

1. Junk ATI 2016 and install ATI 2015 - will that be okay under Windows 10?

2. Open the configuration settings for a backup and edit the exclusions using a text editor or whatever.

Does anyone know where the backup file settings are kept and whther they're editable outside of ATI?

I found where the backup configuration files for ATI 2016 are held: C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts

I've made the change in the appropriate text/xml file to add the exclusion, loaded the backup script in ATI 2016 and hey presto! the exclusion I added through the text editor is there.  It's a workaround of sorts but it shouldn't really be necessary.

John,

You have clearly performed what corrective measures that normally clear up most problems.  Clearly there is something about the installation on your machine that is different than what is normal.

I recommend that use Windows Search to find %temp% and find the Windows MSI Installer log file.  Copy that file to a location that you can easily remember.  Now open Acronis True Image and choose the Help feature (open book icon in left column of GUI), choose feedback and write a description of your issue making reference to or providing link to this thread.  Attach the installer log and include the System Report and Send that to Acronis.

If you want more info on the installer log look here:  https://kb.acronis.com/content/56655

Thanks again Enchantech.

I've already done that and generated a system report which included the installer log.  I'll wait to see if Acronis come back to me with any useful information.

For now I can get by just by modifying the XML/text file that contains the exclusions.

I'm having the same issue.  Windows 10 64-bit, Kaspersky Total Security, and the latest Acronis installed 2 days ago.  All standard updates for production builds, no betas.

It is really weird in this day and age to tamper with the AV to get a program to run, but I've already checked the documentation ans set my Kaspersky is set to not scan

C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\

and

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\

I'm going to try John's bypass, but really this is something that should be looked at.

I had to re-install Windows 10 last week as it developed an issue where, after logging in, I'd get an error message saying "cannot load start menu" and I'd end up being logged off.  I had to re-install all my applications but when loading a freshly-installed Acronis TI 2016 and creating a backup, I found that the file exclusions dialog worked just fine, so clearly it was an issue with my Windows 10 install (an upgrade from Windows 7) which caused the problem I posted in this thread.

But it strikes me that the program code for ATI 2016 isn't very robust if something odd with a Windows install stops a dialog button from appearing.  Why not just use a standard Windows file chooser dialog?

I struggled with same issue, here a video.

As my 30 day support has passed, I unfortunately cannot help Acronis anymore to check their code or help their users with a fix.

For me posting #15 does the trick - thanks John - to configure backups without errormessages.

Maybe someone with active support access will report it, feel free to use my video link.

I watched your video and have a solution for you.  In your video you would click the + button, add your exclusion path, and then click the + button again.  The appliction is programmed so that if you do this the app thinks that you have made a mistake in the path name or selection so it removes the entry.  To get an entry to stick after you enter the path to the exclusion hit the Enter key on your keyboard and presto, exclusion added to the list!

Cheers!

Hello All,

If you need to exclude a folder frin a file/folder-level backup, open the Browse dialog window, where you selected what to include into your backup, and just unmark unnecessary files and folders.

"Browse" button was removed from Exclusions tab for file/folder-level backups intentionally so that it does not overlap with above described technique of excluding files and folders from backup.

EntirePC/disk/partition-level backups still have a button to open Browse dialog under Exclusions tab.

Slava

Add a location to Exclusions List (solved)

I also found it impossible to add a folder to the exclusions list, but I have found a solution.

Like other users, I would press the "+" symbol to open a box, and then type (or paste) the folder location into it.

The most logical way to confirm your action, is to press the "Enter" key or the "Ok" button, but this never works!

The solution is to enter the address you want excluded and then left click with the mouse on the area just outside the box.

Doing this should enter the chosen exclusion folder correctly into the list.

For example: I wanted to exclude all Temporary Internet Files.

After entering this into the text box, I clicked on the area just below the box and this entry appeared at the bottom of the list:

*Temporary Internet Files*

I hope this helps...

I had this exact same issue with ATI 2018. What you said fixed the issue (Exclude from the check boxes not the exclude list)

However, this whole complication could be avoided if the +/- are removed from the exclusion list for files and folders and a little note with a link telling you how to exclude properly
