I posted this in another thread, but looking at it - I think it is probably better to ask in a new thread.

'm having a rough go here.

I'm getting a generic fail when trying to update my Acronis True Image 2016 to this build. (6581)

I wanted to reinstall from scratch, but add/remove programs says there is nothing to remove under my Acronis True Image 2016.

I found the KB article and it mentions first removing recovery manager, but the article doesn't match the options I get so I see no way to remove it.

In short,

New version - fails to install, old version non-removable from my PC.  I'd really appreciate some help.

Oh - btw attempting to clone a drive also fails now so basically I have a very corrupt/nonfunctioning install that I can't remove or upgrade.  I got a BSOD one time (when trying to clone my current boot drive to a same size drive I use as a backup) and after that it just fails and doesn't seem to attempt to run.

Hi Neil,

I've never used ASRM myself so am not much help.  However, i wanted to post to let you know I've seen it and I have posted it to the MVP forums in hopes someone else can take a look and try to assist.  

I've also understood it to be that you go into the Acronis Windows application >>> more tools and click on the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager from there to enable it.  To disable it, you do the same thing.  I've attached my 2017 screenshot - should look about the same in 2016.

If you go that route, does it not give an option to disable it?

As for cloning, you might have better luck taking a disk backup and restoring the backup... 

Cloning is limited in that it fails if there are bad/dirty sectors on the disk.  Running "chkdsk /f /r" on the source and destination drives first may help there.

Cloning is also limited because it cannot clone hybrid disks (or those where the motherboard has a small SSD for cache and a seperate disk for data).  It does not work on dynamic disks either (disks in RAID 0,1,5, etc or hybrid drives)

Cloning does not work when cloning to disk with different sector sizes.

If chkdsk /f /r doesn't allow a clone to work after that, go with the trusty back and restore method instead.  It's all I ever do.  Here is a thread with more of my thoughts and procedures on cloning.  https://forum.acronis.com/forum/126072#comment-391792

Neil, please download a copy of the ATIH 2016 bootable Rescue Media ISO file (assuming that you may not already have this created) and burn this to CD or DVD then you can boot from this and should be able to remove or disable the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager from the rescue environment.

Once you have removed the ASRM, then restart back into Windows and then download and run (as administrator) the Acronis Cleanup Tool from the link in my signature below, and this will cleanup all traces of Acronis True Image or Disk Director programs from your system.  You will need to restart the computer to complete the clean action.

Hopefully, at that point, you should be able to attempt a clean install of ATIH 2016 build 6581 - download the full installer from your Acronis account if you don't already have it, and check the checksum value to ensure the download was good.  I use the free HashTabs utility for this purpose as it makes checking the checksum very simple by adding a new tab to the Windows Explorer Properties page for the downloaded file.

Addendum, if you have the Acronis Secure Zone activated, this too can be deactivated / removed using the bootable rescue media.

You nailed this for me thank you - I was mistaking Manage Acronis Secure Zone with Activate/(Deactivate) Acronis Startup Recovery Manager.  I could indeed deactivate from the 2nd choice and have done so.

I'll try the other advice now and try to remove the old and reinstall full after I make a recovery disk first just in case.  I don't have time today but hope to try it tomorrow or by the weekend at latest.  I'll report back how that goes.

thank you - now that I have Acronis Startup Recovery deactivated I'll try the cleanup tool option and full install of 6585.  I already dl'd 6585 so just need to do the cleanup first.  I'll report back after I do that but feel better about the attempt knowing it won't leave the ASRM active now that I have it deactivated.

I hope to try it all before end of week.

thank you both kindly - successfully ran remove tool and I was able to install 6581 build.  I'll try a clone of drive as next step since I have a 240gb SSD spare that my goal is to just make a backup to my current 240gb SSD and hit up this forum if I encounter any issues.

If possible, try to take a backup before a clone, just in case.  If things go bad, or you clone your blank to your data on accident, you backup is your lifeboat.
