Acronis hangs when used from removable bootable media

Thread needs solution

I have created a bootable cd and a bootable USB stick. The system loads fine and operates for the initial where I can select an option e.g restore which then takes me to a second screen but when I attempt to select an option on the second screen e.g changing the option for backup type from incremental to differential the system hangs and freezes solid. The only things working are the mouse and power buttons on the pc. It seems the programme cannot go further than screen 2.

I have backups stored on a hard disk in a secure zone. All functionality is ok when Acronis is run from the system disk which is fine for backup creation but no good for system recovery which kind of renders the software useless.

I have tried to submit a support ticket but cannot send it as the next button seems to do nothing. I think the software has got it in for me !!!

Phil

P.S. I have tried disableing Bit Defender total security but that made no difference.

Phil, welcome to the user forums.

Some more information about your computer system would help us to better understand the environment where you are attempting to use the Acronis bootable Rescue Media?

This is the ATIH 2017 forum, so can you confirm that this is the version you are using, and if so, which build do you have?  Build 8053 for the Standard version and build 6206 for the Premium / New Generation version are the latest builds for ATIH 2017.

Next, which type of Acronis Rescue Media have you created?  The standard media is based on a Linux kernel OS and may give some issues for new computer systems with UEFI & Secure Boot enabled.  You can also create the Windows PE version of the Rescue Media which requires you first install the Windows 10 ADK first before it can be created, but which provides a much higher level of compatibility with modern systems.

There is a third option, which is to build the MVP version of the WinPE Rescue Media (again needs the ADK to be installed) but allows for more flexibility in terms of allowing both 32-bit and 64-bit media to be created (separately) and also allows additional device drivers to be injected into the rescue media (for support of SSD's configured in RAID mode for example).

I am a little confused by your final comment about disabling BitDefender Total Security as this should only ever be active when Windows is booted, so should be of no interest when booting from a CD or USB stick with the Rescue Media?

Hello Steve

Sorry, the comment re bitdefender was reference to not being able to submit a ticket via the Acronis website and not the problems with the bootable media as I know sometimes security software can block some things..

All I can tell you is I followed the Acronis instructions to produce the rescue media to the letter. All that stuff about ADK's, Linux kernel OS, ATIH 2017, Windows PE version, MVP version, SSD's configured in RAID may as well be in Chinese as it doesn't mean much to me. Anyhow here is a brief pc specification.

Phil, thanks for the extra information / clarification about BitDefender.

I would suspect that your Samsung SSD 960 EVO drive may be configured in RAID mode for the SATA controller - you should be able to check this by looking at your BIOS settings for the drive.

If this is the case, then the standard Rescue Media will not work for you as it does not have any driver support for RAID.

I understand that all the talk about Windows PE media, Windows ADK etc sounds like a foreign language, but the reality is that it is a whole lot easier than you may first think.

In the main ATIH 2017 GUI, go to the Tools page, then click on Rescue Media Builder then on the second option for the WINPE-Based Media with Acronis Plug-In this will then guide you in regard to the Windows ADK if you do not already have this installed.  The ADK download is large so may take a little while to download, but when it has, and you launch the installer, you only need to select the top 3 options to be installed (leave the other options unchecked).

The basic WinPE Rescue Media also does not have RAID support but will show you whether it can boot on your computer correctly or not.  If you cannot see the Samsung EVO drive, then that will be confirmation that it uses RAID and I can give you further guidance for the MVP Tool version of the media to overcome this.

I had the same problem on a Lenovo T450 machine (with simple 850 EVO SSD, no RAID) running Win7E64 with ATIH 2018:

The "Simple" boot medium based on Linux x64 bootet, but after the first click on any section no more clicks were accepted. Also pressed keys only resulted in a "beep".

I then downloaded and installed first Win7 AIK and then Win10 ADK and built Rescue Media, but neither worked.

THEN I saw that the Acronis Rescue Media Builder DOES NOT CLEAN the target drive before putting the PE on it. It does not even overwrite existing folders but assumes that required parts are already in place when it finds matching files!

After formatting the USB stick to be used as Rescue Medium AND THEN again preparing it as Win7-x64 based PE everything is fine as it seems: Acronis Recovery is startet and allows for selection of a backup file even from a 3TB (GPT) external drive. (Real recovery not yet validated, but this not the topic here.)
