ATIH2017 build 8029 install fails
On my system (Win 10, 64-bit) with build 5554 currently installed, I attempt to update to build 8029. I use two different ways: 1) from within the running ATIH, which offers the update, and 2) from the downloaded installation file. Both options fail (in at least visibly) the same way.
It starts unpacking the installation files and shows the initial window for updating to 8029. When I press the Update button, the screen becomes black, except for the update window. It shows a progress bar up to a few percent, enables the screen, blacks the screen another (much shorter) time. When it then enables the desktop screen its own window says the update has failed (with an exclamation mark in a triangle). When I press the "Display information" button, the new page says:
Product: | Acronis True Image 2017 |
Build: | 8029 |
Datum: | 10-03-2017 |
Tijdstip: | 22:33:43 |
Meer info: | AcronisKnowledge Base |
Foutgegevens: | Installation has failed. Het systeem kan het opgegeven bestand niet vinden |
(For those not understanding Dutch: the message is "The system can not find the file specified".)
The Knowledge Base I get referred to simply indicates: "There is no information about this error available now."
Anyone familiar with the same problem? Any idea about what file might be missing or where to find a clue?
TIA.

Cleanup is probably the easiest/best method.
However, a few people who upgraded from older versions before upgrading to 2017 also had upgrade errors. I had them go to
C:\programdata and right click the "Acronis' folder
select properties
navigate to the security tab and click on advanced.
change ownership to "administrators" - even if it shows them as the owner already. Let it do it's thing.
close the advanced window and in the security window - give administrators "full access" and your account "full access" - let it do it's thing.
Now, re-run the installer (the one you downloaded). Make sure to launch it by "righ-clicking" and use the option to "run as administrator" even if already lgged in with an admin account.
That should hopefully allow it to install without needing to do a cleanup first.

I had this problem today. Solved it by removing C:\programdata\acronis folder altogether and do a restart.

Martin, thanks for giving your feedback, glad you got the problem solved.

Things are getting stranger...
At first, I changed the properties of the C:\ProgramData\Acronis folder. No change: install fails as before.
Secondly, I uninstalled from within the Configuration Panel (Programs list). It ran up to 50 - 60% and failed with the same triangle and now with an Unrecoverable error message.
A retry with the downloaded original installation file (which I still have available) did the same, failing at 50 - 60%.
The CleanupTool ran without errors and requested a reboot at the end. So I did.
Now the clean installation should have worked, but it ran even worse. Without blacking the screen (stopping Explorer.exe, as I understand now) it immediately returns with the exclamation mark triangle and the well-known "cannot find file" message.
Perhaps something did not install properly when upgrading my system from a 64G SSD to a 256G one. But that was many months ago. It would help (at least I hope) if the installer tells me what file it was searching for. Or is there a hidden debugging command line option for it?
For now I am stuck with a system without any version of Acronis True Image Home, no new and no old one.

Roelof, did you try the suggestion to actually delete the C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis folder (after uninstalling) as advised by Martin above?
Please see KB 46710: Acronis True Image: Installation Fails in Windows which has a comprehensive list of different issues and suggested solutions that may help you.
If you still have problems, then I would recommend opening a Support Case directly with Acronis for this install issue.
I do not see how your upgrade of SSD from 64GB to 256GB would affect the ability to install the product?

Thanks for all answers everybody. I tried all options presented sofar.
In the meantime I also got a response from the support group, alsoe with some ideas. I tried these too. Also failing.
But...
These experiments gave me a clue. The first indication was the failure of forcing a Restore Point. It failed after an extreme long time, indicating a problem with the Volume Shadowing Service. In fact, the Event Viewer showed some problems here and there, including VSS.
Looking a bit further, it also was clear, that no Windows Update had succeeded since the beginning of February.
So, to conclude, I have a problem deep inside the Windows kernel that does not affect my daily work. But I have to repair that first. And I am sure ATIH2017 will install whence resolved.
Thanks again for all attempts to find a clue!

Roelof, I would recommend running the Windows Troubleshooter for Windows Update and any other obvious areas of your system, which may clear some of the errors that you are seeing. You will find this in the Windows 10 Control Panel as Troubleshooting.

Thanks Steve, I am now in the middle of my troubleshooting process and used the one for Windows Update already a few times and every time it "repairs" the same flaws found. So no success sofar. As it appears now, the problem is deeper inside Windows, as also the creation of a Restore Point (recommended by the Acronis support) fails referring to a problem in the Disk Shadowing service. I think I will concentrate on that part first. But that's outside the scope of this forum.

Roelof, thanks for the update, hope you manage to get to the bottom of this problem. If all else fails, then I would recommend doing an in-place upgrade for Windows 10 (which is what happens when MS release a new build version like the 1607 Anniversary Update).
See webpage: Windows 10: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade for more information.

Hello Steve, After long time I will come back to this issue. There was no urgent need to have a running version installed on my workstation, so I put the troubleshooting on low priority. (The CDROM with the backup program performed flawlessly - that's why.)
This evening I thought it would be interesting to see if the problem still exists. But many things have changed since my previous attempts. I now run an upgraded Windows 10 (v.1907, build 16299) and downloaded Acronis 2017 (v.8058).
I am glad to announce a successful installation now! Apparently one of the Windows 10 upgrades solved my problem on the fly.
Thanks for your answers.

Roelof, thank you for taking time to pass on your update / feedback. I am glad to hear your positive news that all is now well for both Windows 10 and ATI 2017 latests builds installed.
